We have a particular focus on businesses from the technology, real estate, and life sciences sectors. Our experiences in these sectors have allowed us to work on landmark real estate projects, so called “mega-deals” and the issuance of flagship pharmaceutical patented products.We have developed expertise in both contentious and non-contentious matters.Our non-contentious expertise is particularly focused on advisory work related to M&A and business restructurings. This has included, for example, cross-border restructuring of a 100+ entities group; cross-border Business-Transfer Pricing Model Optimization involving several jurisdictions. In addition, we assist businesses’ executives in structuring their activities, assets, and investments. Through practical, creative, and pragmatic advice, we promote optimal tax risk management combined with (tax) value creation.Our contentious expertise is wide-ranging, from representing clients before the Ruling Commission or during a tax audit, to defending high-profile cases before the highest Belgian or European Courts. This has included, for example, rulings on Innovation-related incentives, restructurings or transfer pricing; cross-border withholding tax issues; audits and litigations focused on innovation tax incentives; or various landmark cases in relation with property taxes.Over time, we also have developed particular experience in tax policy matters. This experience ranges from representing clients in strategic discussions with local and international Governmental Authorities or with the Press to proposing, drafting, or amending a law.Finally, we are also active in the academic and scientific world as we frequently lecture, give speeches, and publish contributions on various tax topics.

Requirements

• The associate we are looking for: is passionate about (direct and indirect) taxes in the broadest sense with a specific interest in international tax matters (e.g. cross border transactions, structuring, transfer pricing) or in contentious tax (administrative or judiciary) matters;
• is eager to learn;
• has between 2 and 6 years’ experience of working in a tax department at an international law or consulting firm with relevant experience in litigious matters;
• holds a Master of Laws degree from a Belgian university followed by a tax degree, with strong academic records;
• is a team-player who likes to work autonomously;
• has excellent legal and analytical skills;
• is business-oriented and always looking for a pragmatic solution;
• wishes to be involved on international projects entailing daily contacts with foreign colleagues and clients;
• wishes to be involved in various “academic projects” (writing articles, giving seminars, etc.);
• wants to leave their mark on the development of the fast-growing Belgian tax practice;
• is fluent in Dutch/French and English, with a good command of the other national language; and
• has good communication skills and a good team spirit.
