Introduction 

The Office of Speaker’s Counsel provides legal advice to Mr Speaker, the Clerk of the House and all the staff teams in the House. The Office consists of twenty-five qualified lawyers (a mixture of solicitors and barristers), with the support of a full-time trainee legal executive and a part-time paralegal. 

Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Joint Head of the Select Committee Legal Advisers’ team, responsible for providing and co-ordinating legal advice to all Select Committees of the House of Commons. Particularly important areas of work are the Joint Committee on Human Rights, the Home Affairs Select Committee and the Justice Select Committee. 

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

• Personally to provide specialist technical advice and support on domestic and international human rights law to the Joint Committee on Human Rights, and to coordinate the legal work on that Committee.
• To advise and support the Joint Committee on Human Rights in identifying human rights issues of importance in the UK.
• Management and supervision of a team of highly qualifies and skilled legal advisers.
• Strategic planning for the future of the team and appropriate legal support for committees in a changing political and legal context.

Person specification

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

• Qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales
• Excellent legal knowledge and understanding, including in particular expertise and significant experience in the law and practice of human rights
• Proven ability to lead a team of highly motivated specialist professionals, inclusively and with sensitivity to the needs of a diverse team, including development and coaching.
