Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Climate Change Division delivers effective strategic guidance and high-impact action in support of the transition towards climate stability. Its work is guided by ambition, innovation, credible science, and alignment to global climate goals and needs of individual countries. The Climate Change Division works with Members States and Partners to accelerate and support a just transition by addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation through enhancing implementation capacity, provision of data information and knowledge, access to finance and technology, and building resilience. This internship is in the Finance Unit, Mitigation Branch, Climate Change Division, Paris/Bangkok duty stations. The Finance Unit’s mandate is to mobilize and accelerate investments to increase the ambition for climate mitigation action and climate resilient development through a just energy transition, thereby supporting countries’ shift to a low-carbon development pathway. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Finance Unit, the intern will be responsible for the following tasks: Responsibilities: • Support the implementation of the various on­going Unit programmes, including the Mediterranean Investment Sustainable Energy Facility (MISEF), Seed Capital Assistance Facility (SCAF) and EmPower II (see www.unep.org/climatechange/finance). • Support the development of presentations for meetings with prospective partners and development of project proposals for various activities undertaken by the Finance Unit. The Intern will also support the development of analysis, briefings, minutes, and presentations for global, regional, and national workshops and seminars. • Research and analysis in preparation for publications with project partners (governments, academic institutions, and environmental organizations) to develop best practices and policy recommendations. • Support development of communication outreach material, including both print and online media. • When required, the Intern will also support the general organization of events, including sending of invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Preferred Area of Study: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Finance, International Relations, Environmental Policy, Economics, Development or a related field. Fully proficient computer skills and use of web-based platforms and relevant software e.g. word processing, PowerPoint, excel, internal databases, Internet etc. Candidate should demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter. Candidate should demonstrate ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE: “fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
