Duties and Responsibilities

The Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB) is responsible for producing a wide range of research products on drugs and crime, including flagship publications such as the World Drug Report (WDR) and the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons. The World Drug Report is an annual publication, which aims to improve the understanding of the world drug problem and to contribute towards fostering greater international cooperation for countering its effect on health, governance and security. The Global Report on Trafficking in Persons is released every two years since 2012 in line with General Assembly resolution 64/293 (United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons). RAB also produces a wide range of ad hoc thematic reports, surveys and research briefs on an array of topics related to drugs and crime, such as homicide, gender-related killings of women and girls, global prison trends, illicit drug cultivation and drug use. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Research and Trend Analysis Branch. The internship is located in the Office of the Chief, Research and Trend Analysis Branch, Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). The intern will support the Branch Chief and specific research teams located in the Research and Trend Analysis Branch, with the following tasks: • Collect information based on review of scientific and grey literature on different research topics and sections related to all forms of crime – including organized crime, drug use, manufacturing and trafficking at different levels (country, regional and international). • Compile and summarize the information based on literature review related to the research topics/areas assigned. • Assist with reference management and formatting for written outputs. • Assist in presenting the compiled data in graphs and tables. • Produce information output by designing visual content for digital application (e.g., infographics).

Qualifications/special skills

HS Diploma is required. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). The applicant may preferably be enrolled in sociology, political science, geography, criminology or a related field, with a focus of quantitative research studies. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to perform review of scientific literature, and summarize the results is most desirable. Ability to draft and communicate research findings will be desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Additional Information

Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship.
