Project

The current anonymisation process operates using a deny-list approach, where only fields explicitly annotated as PII are anonymised. This leaves the possibility for unmarked sensitive information to slip through. To address this, we have built a prototype that extracts data from all columns of anonymised parquet datasets and applies PII detection to identify any remaining sensitive data. The results are ranked by potential matches, allowing for further human or automated inspection.

Key Responsibilities

As an intern, you will contribute to the continuation and enhancement of this project by working on the following tasks:

  • Apply PII Detection to Real Data: Extend the use of the tool from test datasets to real-world anonymised datasets. Investigate potential PII that may have been missed and assist in improving the anonymisation process.

  • Optimise Presidio Configuration: Refine the existing PII detection configuration to reduce false positives and negatives. This may include creating allow-lists for common non-sensitive terms, disabling unnecessary recognisers, and improving the overall detection accuracy.

  • Leverage LLMs (Large Language Models): Explore the integration of LLMs to enhance the PII detection process. This could involve using LLMs as standalone recognisers, incorporating them within Presidio as specialised recognisers, or applying them to post-process and refine Presidio’s results to reduce noise.

  • Enhance Detection Ranking: Investigate methods for improving how detected PII is ranked by importance or likelihood of being a true positive. This will aid in focusing attention on high-priority issues and reduce the manual effort needed for verification.

  • Data Exploration & Sampling: Assist in designing processes for efficiently sampling and testing large datasets with complex nested structures, arrays, and maps. Ensure scalability and robustness of the tool when applied to larger, more complex data.

  • Automation and Integration [BONUS]: Assist in integrating the PII detection tool into existing anonymisation pipelines, ensuring seamless automation for end-to-end processing.

Your Profile

We are looking for tech-passionate students in computer science or similar fields, with strong English skills. Ideal candidates have experience or knowledge in software development and familiar with technologies like Scripting, Python or related Data Science languages. Knowledge of Agile methodology is a plus.
