What your future may holdThe Belgian Risk & Compliance team at A&O Shearman plays a crucial role in ensuring that the Belgian firm adheres to the local legal and regulatory frameworks in Belgium. This is particularly important given the complex legal landscape in which the firm operates internationally. The team is tasked with a variety of responsibilities that are essential to safeguard the firm, its reputation and ensuring operational success.The Belgian Head of Risk & Compliance is responsible for:

• Implementing global risk policies and monitoring Belgian-specific risks and related policies and processes;
• Claims management, with interaction with A&O Shearman’s global risk management team, brokers and insurers;
• Assisting the Belgian Partner Group with risk management matters;
• Following up and monitoring of applicable Belgian legal and regulatory (including ethical) rules;
• Drafting and updating the Belgian Risk Register and policies;
• Managing the Belgian engagement letter templates and assisting with Belgian law queries and matters relating to engagement letters;
• Implementing relevant (EU) regulations relevant for the firm (Whistleblowing, CSRD/CSDDD, DAC 6, GDPR,…);
• Assisting in reviewing supplier contracts;
• Reporting on annual compliance (use of Third Party Accounts);
• Providing training sessions to the partners, lawyers and staff related to risk management and compliance;
• Collaborating with the Global Risk & Compliance Team on international projects (e.g. in relation to anti-money laundering) and surveys, and providing Belgian input into such projects and surveys;
• Assisting the Global Risk & Compliance Team with their queries relating to Belgian legal and regulatory (including ethical) rules and helping to ensure that Global Policies are up to date from a Belgian legal and regulatory (including ethical) perspective.

You will report to the Managing Partner of A&O Shearman Belgium, the Global Head of Risk & Compliance and the Belgian Partner Group, and will be part of the Belgian Management team.Your skillset

• You obtained a Master in Law and you have gained at least 8 years of experience in Risk & Compliance Management;
• You have an excellent command of English, French and Dutch (both written and spoken);
• You have strong communication skills, demonstrating a clear and articulate standard of written and verbal communication in a complex environment;
• You are a creative and flexible person;
• You have an entrepreneurial spirit;
• You have strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to maintain a variety of relationships with multiple stakeholders;
• You are self-motivated, well-organised, and able to perform tasks independently;
• You have a great sense of organisation and planning, you are process driven and attentive to details.
