Assessment Centre: December 2024/ January 2025 TBC (travel and accommodation will be reimbursed)Please note that we can only accept a maximum of 2 applications per candidate.The Energy Data Centre (EDC) provides a comprehensive information discovery resource which makes energy research data, projects and publications available to the community. It supports research outputs to be accessible and reusable thus enabling Open Science and reproducibility aims. The Energy Data Centre is part of the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) project that brings UK researchers together to research into Whole Systems Energy. We are undertaking a major project to re-engineer the portal using new technology and this would be the focus of this role. The small and friendly EDC team develop and maintain the discovery system and manage the content within it. We are looking for someone interested in full stack web development in an energy research context supporting discovery, research data management & preservation, and Open Science. This role gives hands-on experience in a national information discovery service, utilising a range of skills from software development to content management.The Energy Data Centre is based within the Technology Department’ Energy Research Unit (ERU). ERU has a long history in energy research and runs a test site with a wind turbine and green ammonia plant. STFC Technology provides technology, engineering and support of both STFC’s facilities and programmes and the wider research programme.   • Supporting and maintaining the current portal through specific projects
  • Being a member of the technical redevelopment team by:
  • Software development of Django applications
  • Writing systems documentation
  • Creating automated testing
  • Ensuring the portal is accessible and user friendly: taking a lead on user interface design
  • Content management: working with other members of the team to add content and perform routine data quality checks
  • Preservation & FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable & Reusable) activities: developing technical solutions to ensure the content Is kept secure for the long-term and remains FAIR.

  • Achieved, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study (S)

  • Interest or experience in Software development (S &I)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to build positive working relationships with a range of colleagues at different levels of seniority (S&I)
  • Effective management of digital objects, either in a personal or educational setting. e.g. project data, documents or photographs (S & I)
  • Interest or experience in user interface design and development

Desirable:

  • A knowledge of, and interest in, energy research and sustainability (I)
  • Interest in research data management and/or Open Science (I)
