You will have an excellent track record of teaching in higher education, as well as conducting and publishing research at an international level.You will carry out teaching in the study programmes of the ULB’s Department of Political Science, and research in one of the centres of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences (PhiSoc, ). The Department currently consists of 23 full-time permanent academic staff working across all fields of political science. The Department’s undergraduate and graduate programmes bring together a community of over 2,000 students.You will offer a teaching and research programme in international studies, with a specialisation in the study of armed conflict and political violence, conflict management and resolution, peacekeeping and/or international intervention. The search committee welcomes geographical specialisations on Africa and the Middle East. We will also consider thematic expertise (e.g. links between conflict, security and development, or between conflict, resources and/or environment).You will teach at undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) level, particularly within the MA in international relations. You will be able to coordinate a team of teaching assistants in relation to your courses and to teach both in English and French. Lastly, you will supervise MA theses in your domains of expertise as well as in the wider field of international studies.You will also contribute to the research activities of the Department of Political Science. You will be invited to participate in research taking place at the ULB’s Centre for international politics (REPI, Recherche et études en politique internationale), or to develop new research directions within the Centre. You will demonstrate your ability to, or potential for, conducting research and disseminating results at an international level. Additionally, you will demonstrate their ability to, or potential for setting up collaborative research project and apply for both internal and external funding (e.g. FNRS or European research funds, among others). Lastly, you will be expected to supervise doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.Courses taught at the time of hiring:The typical teaching load for a full-time academic staff member of the Department includes four courses or equivalent per academic year, for a total of 96 contact hours (typically four 24h courses). You will eventually be expected to take on administrative and/or logistical responsibilities related to the Department’s teaching or research activities, depending on needs.Teaching should ideally be evenly distributed between the undergraduate and graduate level, and is adjusted based on the Department’s needs and resources. Academic staff are also expected to supervise and evaluate MA theses and final dissertations.In your first year of employment, you will be expected to:
). The course is aimed at second-year students in the Department’s BA in political science. Its objective is to provide participants with an introduction to the study of conflicts from an international relations perspective, by enabling them to carry out documentary research on a contemporary conflict (from the beginning of the Cold War to the present day). Teaching is organised in the form of seminar tutorials (24h, 30 students). You will coordinate a team of teaching assistants and teach and evaluate one of the seminar tutorials. * Teach in the course POLID520 Security Practices and Political Violence (
). The course is aimed at first-year students in the “Peace, security and conflict” minor of the Department’s MA in international relations. Its objective is to provide participants with an overview of the research themes, concepts and theoretical tools used to understand armed conflicts, security dynamics and political violence, as well as with an analysis of the social dynamics of contemporary wars and the professionalisation of security. The lectures are supplemented by seminar tutorials (12h) in which students are encouraged to apply the theoretical knowledge presented beforehand. You will work in conjunction with the course coordinator and a team of teaching assistants. You will initially teach and assess two seminar groups.A third course will be added to your teaching responsibilities in the second year of your contract, and a fourth and final course in the third year. These courses will be taught either in English or in French. Depending on the Department’s needs and resources, they will involve teaching international studies in the Bachelor in Political Science, Master in International Relations, or any other programme organised by the Department.
