The ideal candidate is looking for a long-lasting career within the Fire Prevention Bureau and will perform a full array of fire inspection and prevention duties with an emphasis in weed abatement and vegetation.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Fire Inspector I is the entry-level classification in the fire inspector series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision from the Fire Prevention Supervisor, incumbents perform residential and commercial inspections and prevention duties of a more routine nature, perform duties for weed abatement, as well as learn City policies, California Building/Fire Codes and specific methods and techniques for assigned areas of responsibility. This classification may alternatively be staffed with Fire Inspector II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed both in an office and outdoors. The incumbent in this position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The position entails working in situations that may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, electrical shock or mechanical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, drive motorized vehicles and often work with interruptions.

Work in this position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift and transport equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: 2 years of experience dealing with the public, including identifying and resolving problems is required.

License and/or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California State Driver’s License is required at the time of hire. Possession of a valid equivalent is acceptable during the application process.

  • Conduct fire inspection and prevention duties for residential, commercial and industrial structures, including the issuance of permits and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances; inspect and test fire alarms, hydrants and suppression systems; educate the public in fire prevention.

  • Plan and organize on-site inspections of required fire protection systems; schedule and inspect mandated facilities, such as schools for State fire and life safety violations; respond to and resolve fire hazard complaints; inspect the operation of fireworks sales and shows; issue notices of violation and pre-citations where appropriate; provide compliance recommendations; assist in developing compliance mediation measures.

  • Coordinate the City Weed Abatement program; make in-progress inspections of work performed by city contractor; address problems encountered by City contractor in the interpretation of work orders; coordinate and assist in the preparation of weed abatement charges for City Council approval.

  • Conduct tests on fire hydrants, alarms and sprinkler systems in accordance with approved fire protection plans; implement fire prevention and inspection plans; prepare and maintain statistical data and reports; participate in continuing fire prevention training programs.

  • Interpret codes and regulations; explain required inspections and fire prevention requirements to owners, architects, engineers, contractors and the public; advise owners on matters related to applicable permits; maintain records and files of inspections made and actions taken.

  • Assist with reviewing parcel maps and subdivision maps, as well as residential, commercial and industrial projects for fire protection system requirements; interpret and explain codes, standards and federal and state regulations to establish conditions of approval and mitigation measures; coordinate activities with other City departments and outside agencies.

  • May respond to the emergency scene to assist the Incident Commander; may act as assistant to Fire Department Public Information Officer.

Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, methods and technologies used in modern fire inspection, prevention and suppression efforts.

  • Operational characteristics of fire safety systems.

  • Building construction, rating systems, exiting plans and fire department service capabilities.

  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations.

  • Methods of operation for various smoke detectors, portable fire extinguishers, and basic knowledge of fire prevention practices.

  • Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

Ability to:

  • Apply policies, procedures, codes and regulations pertaining to fire inspections and prevention.

  • Plan and organize daily work schedules and prioritize inspections.

  • Make sound decisions within established guidelines.

  • Establish positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.

  • Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, plans and technical manuals.

  • Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.

  • Implement, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations.
