The vacant position is assigned to the research group: “Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics” headed by Prof. Dr. Fabian Fassnacht. In our research group we are interested in the use and development of remote sensing techniques to answer methodological and ecological questions with respect to forest and grassland ecosystems.  For our recently established working group we are looking for a motivated and dedicated team member which can support us with tasks concerning scientific programming, maintenance and handling of sensor systems and UAVs, realization of field campaigns and IT. We are seeking for a candidate who would like to work in an open, scientifically active and internationally oriented team.

With us, you will gain insight into Berlin’s multifaceted university landscape and contribute to the successful completion of research projects through your technical know-how. We offer you a young, international and innovative working environment on the green Geo-Campus in Lankwitz. The FU Berlin has a certified Dual Career & Family Service and offers numerous courses in its own continuing education center which will make it easier for you to start your new job and give you perspectives for professional development. To ensure a flexible working environment, we offer the possibility to reduce the workload to 80%.
Job description:
The main tasks related to this position include:
– support staff members with their scientific programming activities in common scripting
languages (R, Python, Java)
– documentation of programming code
– maintenance and piloting of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) / drones
– maintenance of sensor systems available in the research group (both ground sensors and
UAV sensors, e.g., field spectrometer, terrestrial laserscanner, multispectral cameras, etc.)
– support of field campaigns in Germany and abroad
– support the maintenance of the IT infrastructure and the webpage of the work group

Requirements:
We expect a completed degree (BSc or Master) in Informatics or equivalent knowledge and skills. Furthermore, we expect a deep understanding of geoscientific needs and very good programming skills in either R or Python as well as a proven experience with the handling of remote sensing data and geodata in general. Since we are working in an international environment, good English skills of the candidate are expected.

(Professional) Experience:
We expect at least 2 years of work-experience related to the described main tasks of the position.

Desirable:
Our dream candidate for this position does not only have good technical skills which allows her/him to support the scientific team with programming problems and the realization of field campaigns and remote sensing surveys, but also a genuine interest in nature, vegetation and people. Since future research projects may require field campaigns in potentially remote places, it would be great if the candidate is motivated and interested in spending several days in the field and getting in touch with forests and grasslands. Since the successful candidate will interact a lot with the other team member to support them with technical issues, a genuine interest in helping others and the ability to be patient will be essential to get happy with this position.
