Job description

Hosting description: Professor Isabel A. Nepomuceno Chamorro, from the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at the University of Sevilla, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) in 2024 at this University. Please note that applicants must comply with the Mobility Rule.Brief description of the institution: The Universidad de Sevilla (USE) was established in 1505 and, with more than 70000 students and 6800 staff, is the third largest university in Spain. US embraces academia, industry, engineering and science and, with a relevant educational and technological infrastructure, is an intellectual reference in the South of Europe.More than 10000 students are following postgraduate courses, enrolled into 86 master programs and 152 doctoral programs. And the university holds academic partnerships with 850 institutions throughout the world.US is also devoted to research and innovation; therefore, in addition to its 4300 academic staff, there are 1600 researchers and over 470 scientific groups associated to the university. Research is carried out within academic departments, in 8 research centers and 9 university research institutes.Research facilities offer highly advanced research services at the Center for Research, Technology and Innovation (CITIUS) that provides the most advanced and state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and techniques to research groups, public research institutes and industries This is complemented by important national research centers such as the Institute in Mathematic Research (IMUS), the Biomedicine Research Institute (IBIS), the National Research Center for Accelerators (CNA) and the Institute of Microelectronics (IMSE-CNM).Brief description of the Centre/Research Group: Isabel Nepomuceno belongs to the LSI Department at the Higher School of Computer Engineering of the University of Seville. In the department, Isabel works with a small team of experts in Applied Machine Learning and actively collaborates with Joaquín Dopazo’s team. The collaboration between FPS and US in this project is a strategic alignment that capitalizes on the complementary skills and expertise of both teams to address the challenges in generating synthetic patient data. This partnership is not just a juxtaposition of two entities with distinct capabilities but a synergistic convergence that enhances the project’s depth, scope, and impact across all work packages (WPs). On one hand, FPS, with its extensive experience in real-world data (RWD) analysis, clinical and genomic data management, and machine learning (ML), brings a foundational strength to the project. Their expertise is crucial in understanding the complexities of healthcare data, ensuring its accurate representation, and maintaining ethical compliance. This foundation is critical for establishing the integrity and reliability of the data that forms the basis of the project. On the other hand, US’s specialization in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in advanced techniques like deep learning (DL) and generative models, complements FPS’s strengths. Their expertise is vital in refining data into sophisticated synthetic models that accurately mimic real patient data. This includes developing innovative algorithms and machine learning models that can handle the complexities and nuances of healthcare data,

Project description: The general objective of the project is to design and develop DL-based models for biomedical data analysis to advance disease prediction, monitoring and clinical decision support systems. The general objective can be decomposed into 3 specific objectives. OBJ 1: Generative DL-based method and fusion of DL for imputation. In the case of, for example, the analysis of data from UCI patients, there is a significant amount of missing values, posing a challenge in the field of Multivariate Time Serie Imputation (MTSI). Although in the field of MTSI, generative approaches such as Autoencoder, GANs or other architectures such as GNN are not entirely novel, the use of GANS together with GNN is relatively unexplored, presenting a challenge to be explored in this objective. OBJ 2: Generative and unsupervised models in the analysis of omic data. In the case of omic data from scRNA sequencing technologies, handling the sparsity of the data is one of the various challenges. Sparsity consists of observed zeros, which can beattributed to either expressed genes that go undetected by the technology or the biologically true absence of expression. Several methods for scRAN-seq imputation exist, but none of them integrate prior knowledge (biological networks). Furthermore, to our knowledge, the GANs-based methods or GGN that leverage biological networks such as gene networks or protein-protein interaction networks have not been explored in this context. Another challenge is learning latent space or patterns from scRNA-seq data to study and understand transition processes that are difficult to observe. OBJ 3: Multimodal fusion Machine Learning. Application of Multimodal Deep Learning (MDL) with medical imaging data and clinical data is still in its infancy.Research Area: Information Science and Engineering (ENG)IMPORTANT: Applicants should check their elegibility to apply to the MSCA PF 2024 Call:
  • Any nationality (European Fellowship) / European national or long-term resident of a Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country (Global Fellowship)
  • Be in a possession of a doctoral degree (PhD)
  • Have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in research, measured from the date of award of the doctoral degree
  • Comply with the mobility rule: not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or in the country of the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
