Job title:
Experimental study of perchloroethylene vapour transport in the unsaturated zone of a porous aquifer (M/F)

Job description
Offer DescriptionWe are looking for a qualified and motivated postdoctoral scientist for the DECISIF project (“De l’estimation des cinétiques des zones source de type NAPL in fine”), which is financially supported by ADEME. This R&D project brings together a consortium comprising two engineering companies, GINGER-BURGEAP and GINGER-CEBTP, and two public research laboratories, the Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT) and the Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (ITES).
The aim of the post-doctoral project is to pursue the proposing team’s efforts to model transfer kinetics during experiments on laboratory columns and on the multi-decameter scale of the experimental platform SCERES.The work to be carried out by the postdoctoral fellow will include:
– Complementary laboratory studies: (1) conducting of venting and relaxation tests under controlled, one-dimensional conditions in a homogeneous porous medium (H1F fine sand), and (2) quantifying transfer kinetics between dissolved PCE concentrations in water and forced mobile air.
– Preparation of the venting experiment on the experimental platform SCERES, including the following steps: (1) installation of 4 peripheral air injection rods and 1 central air extraction rod for venting; (2) verification of the operation of the air and water sampling points in the unsaturated zone; and (3) setting up the PCE source zone from the existing injection points.
– Weekly monitoring of PCE vapor concentrations (with multi-gas analyzer INNOVA 1312) and dissolved PCE concentrations in soil water (by GC), following the creation of the pollution source zone.
– Carrying out a controlled venting test (including relaxation steps), starting from a certain vapour concentration, which corresponds to a nearly exhausted NAPL source zone.
– Preparation of a scientific paper on water-air PCE transfer kinetics quantified in the case of two sands, medium and fine.Duration of employment: 9 months, with envisaged/desired start date February 1, 2025.
The Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (ITES) – Unité Mixte de Recherche (UMR) 7063, started up on January 1, 2021 under the auspices of CNRS, the University of Strasbourg and ENGEES. This new UMR is based on the 4 disciplinary scientific pillars of the Earth and near surface environment: Hydrology, Geochemistry, Geology and Geophysics. ITES comprises 7 teams resulting from the merger of LHYGES (Laboratoire d’Hydrologie et de Géochimie de Strasbourg) and IPGS (Institut Physique du Globe de Strasbourg).
Three permanent members of the “Transfer in Continental Hydrosystems” team are involved in the DECISIF project. This team analyzes fluid circulation, fluid mixing conditions and transport of dissolved and particulate elements of natural or anthropogenic origin in hydrosystems.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Environmental science Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Biological sciences Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Geosciences Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Environmental science Years of Research Experience NoneResearch Field Biological sciences Years of Research Experience NoneResearch Field Geosciences Years of Research Experience NoneAdditional InformationEligibility criteria– A Ph.D. of less than two years, in fluid mechanics, hydrology, geosciences or environmental sciences, specialized in modeling the hydrodynamics of porous media and in the study of groundwater.
