Editor – MLex

Global regulatory risk newswire MLex is looking for an Editor for its Brussels bureau. This is an opportunity to cover a wide range of regulatory stories from competition to climate, and is suited both to experienced editors and to reporters with a flair for writing who want to make the switch. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor reporters and help develop their story ideas.

About Us

With our amazing 10,500 people, advanced technology, and expertise, we have the extraordinary opportunity to shape a more just world for ourselves, our customers and communities, and people everywhere. We are dedicated to the mission of advancing the rule of law and our people can see the bright line between strengthening legal infrastructures and furthering peace, prosperity, and progress for all people.

What is MLex:

MLex, a division of Lexis Nexis, is a global news organisation that specialises in regulatory risk. Our expert journalists track material changes to laws that affect business, commerce and trade. We are a truly global business that serves customers in North America, Continental Europe, the UK, Asia and Latin America. MLex operates out of various offices around the world including London, Brussels, Washington D.C., Hong Kong, San Francisco and Sao Paulo.

MLex offers an attractive employment package, with competitive salaries to attract and keep talented journalists. This is an ideal opportunity to become part of a large and growing team at the heart of a thriving, growing and trusted news-media company.

About the role:

The core of the role is to handle copy from the Brussels and London bureaus across all MLex services: Competition, Data Privacy, Trade, Financial Services, Financial Crime, Digital Transport, and Climate. These are complex regulatory issues and the Editor will need to develop a thorough understanding of them all in order to ask the right questions about sourcing or accuracy, or to put the reporting in context.

MLex is a real-time newswire and the successful candidate will be expected to turn around urgent copy quickly. With the support of the Europe Managing Editor, she or he will manage the daily copy flow and make decisions on which stories to prioritise at any given moment.

We also publish in-depth reporting and commentary, and the Editor will work with reporters at all stages of this process, from conceiving the initial idea to crafting the finished product. The successful candidate will furthermore be expected to coach reporters on all aspects of the writing process and contribute to developing MLex’s coverage.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in our Brussels office at least three days a week under our post-Covid hybrid working policy; the other two days may be worked from home (subject to revision).

What we are looking for:

  • Rock-solid editing skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Writing flair in both newswire and commentary formats
  • Ability to understand a range of complex topics
  • Multitasking and prioritising urgent stories
  • Social skills to work with and mentor reporters
