WE ARE

The Legal Service of the Commission – TRADE (Trade Policy) Team

The Legal Service provides comprehensive in-house legal assistance to the Commission and all its departments. Its resources have to be deployed to cover all Commission activities and areas of responsibility. In each area, it must be able to assist the Commission in its functions of drafting legislation and conducting international negotiations, as guardian of the treaties and in the exercise of the implementing powers conferred on it by the EU legislator or by the Treaties. This quadruple task means that the Service has a general advisory role. In order to perform that role effectively, it must be consulted in advance on all documents to be submitted to the Commission. Its opinion is conveyed to the full Commission.

The Legal Service is located in the Commission headquarters in the BERLAYMONT.

WE PROPOSE

The tasks to be undertaken by the lawyers of the Legal Service, working in one of 13 specialised teams, include the examination of the application of Union and international law, in particular examination of the legal problems arising from the application of the Treaties, either in Members States through their national legislation, or in the activities of the Commission or the Union. This mission also includes the defence of EU interests in litigation before the European courts, including the General Court, the Court of Justice and international tribunals and courts. Specific tasks of the Job relate to the World Trade Organisation and its dispute settlement system and trade and investment law more generally.

WE LOOK FOR

Enthusiastic and open-minded, the successful candidate must have:

• a strong legal background, particularly in trade law;
• excellent drafting and communication skills;
• strong litigation experience including before EU courts and/or international adjudicative bodies or tribunals;
• knowledge of Investment arbitration;
• a good knowledge of internal and inter-institutional procedures;
• excellent knowledge of English and very good knowledge of French.
