Anderson House was established in 1996 by Peter Anderson. Peter taught as a freelance from 1978 to 1982. He was then taken on by a private quality language school in Bergamo and taught there from 1982 to 1996. From 1991 to 1996, he worked as the DoS at the same school. In 1996, he opened his own school.AH has been an ‘srl’ (limited company) since 2006. The school is on the outskirts of Bergamo – in Curno, the commercial part of Bergamo – with plenty of free parking. We have a full-time DoS, 10 English teachers plus 5 for other languages. 95% of the teaching is for English, the remaining 5% includes Italian for foreigners, French, German, Spanish, etc. Approximately 25% of our turnover (euro 250,000) is courses (200 children, 200 adults in group courses and individuals, 230 in company courses), and 75% (euro 710,000) Cambridge exams – we do approx 6,000 exams per year. We own the premises and have 9 classrooms, a computer room, a resource room for teachers, 3 offices.
The school is run by the owner Peter Anderson, his wife Antonella Ottonelli, a commercial manager, a front office secretary, and 2 members of staff who work full-time for the Cambridge exams. Some of the work is in companies in the vicinities of the school (10 to 25 min drive). We have 2 school cars. If you have your own, it would be ideal for us as we pay for transfer at ACI rates. Moreover, it would be convenient for you if you want to go sightseeing in the area at weekends.Bergamo
Bergamo has an international airport which serves low-cost airlines (Ryanair, etc). It is in the centre of Lombardy, near the north Italian lakes, the Alps and Milan (30 miles). It is part of an industrial belt that goes from Varese through Milan, on to Bergamo and Brescia – but has plenty of countryside, hills and beautiful mountains. Bergamo has a pretty medieval Upper Town called “Citta’ Alta” surrounded by Venetian walls (UNESCO Heritage); a beautiful renaissance square (Piazza Vecchia) and one of the top-ten provincial museums called Pinacoteca Carrara with a Raphael, a Bellini and a Mantegna. If you are interested in food, Italy is the place to be: the food and wine are excellent and there are many restaurants and pizzerias in Bergamo and the surrounding area. Atalanta – the Bergamo football team – are in Serie A, have just won the Europa League Cup, have qualified for the Champions League and next year will have a completely refurbished stadium, therefore you can see top-class football here. Bergamo also has a women’s volleyball team – Foppapedretti; an American Football team – Lions, and are crazy about cycling: the Giro d’Italia is very popular here. As for rugby you need to go to Brescia which is nearby. There is also a piano festival and Bergamo is the birthplace of Donizetti. The Bergamasks describe themselves as (in Bergamasque): ‘Rasa bergamasca, fiama de rar, sota la sender brasca’ – “The Bergamasque race, seldom ablaze, under the ashes embers” that is a quiet, introvert people of Alpine stock – somewhat rugged and grim at times, but once they get to know you, they become friends for life. Bergamasks are famous in Italy for being extremely hard-working and love manufacturing things. Industry is well developed here (steel and mechanical industry, seamless tubes, cement, tractors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, electrical components, furniture, looms, textile, etc). Most of our client companies are Bergamasque SMEs.
