Managing a student caseload, you will identifying and facilitate the implementation of reasonable adjustments for individual students, and advise academic Schools and professional services on reasonable adjustments.Additionally, you will provide; effective liaison and linkage between services internal and external to the university, and contribute to training and awareness raising activities.We are looking for an individual who has experience of providing advice and guidance on reasonable adjustments, managing a student caseload and has knowledge of disability support in higher education.This is a full time position of 35 hours per week over 5 days, and is fixed-term for 12 months. The post is available from 2 January 2025.Salary: £40,247 – £45,163 per annum (Grade 6)

  • Provide professional advice and guidance on disability support and appropriate reasonable adjustments to internal and external customers that will have institute wide impacts.
  • To use judgement, creativity, and knowledge of support to suggest the most appropriate course of action, where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual disability related issues are understood.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the arena of disability advice and guidance.
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues within disability advice and guidance, supported by advances in disability support provisions within the HE environment.
  • Ensure that the provision of disability advice and guidance is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication

links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies relevant to the disability
sector. * Create specific working groups and /or work collaboratively with colleagues across the

University to achieve objectives specific to enhancing the experience for disabled students. * Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed.
  • Develop and deliver training on disability awareness and access to Higher Education.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department and role.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University regarding support and reasonable adjustments for disabled students.

Specific Duties

  • To provide disability advice and guidance to both current and prospective students, including students who have sensory and physical impairments, mental health conditions, long term health conditions, specific learning difficulties and who are on the autism spectrum.
  • To be responsible for a caseload; identifying reasonable adjustments and support; liaising with academic and professional services staff as appropriate.
  • To undertake initial screening for specific learning difficulties, referring for formal assessment when required and interpreting diagnostic reports.
  • Contribute to the development and provision of both current and prospective student resources and to University policies and procedures.
  • Promote the work of the Disability and Dyslexia Service to all key stakeholders, through a variety of media and participate at events such as university Open Days.
  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance and service delivery.
  • To provide this role at both our Cathays and Heath Park Campuses.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience * Substantial experience of working with disabled people in an advisory role, giving expert advice on support and reasonable adjustments, calmly, sensitively and professionally.

  • Able to demonstrate a professional knowledge of disability support and the Equality Act 2010 in the assessment and application of reasonable adjustments in order to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
  • Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working * Ability to communicate detailed and complex information effectively and professionally.

  • Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
  • Proven ability to develop networks, including statutory and non-statutory organisations, to contribute to long term developments.

Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving * Evidence of the ability to solve diverse and challenging problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions

  • Evidence of ability to plan own work over a year whilst reacting to changes in workload and strategic direction.
  • Evidence of the ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams.

Desirable Criteria * Substantial experience of working in a disability service in a higher education institution or provider

  • Postgraduate qualification relevant to disability
  • Evidence of a commitment to relevant continuing professional development in the field of disability
  • Experience of delivering training on disability issues
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
