Location/Division Specific Information

The Binding Site, now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, has a history of innovative IVD assay and platform delivery which includes Optilite, a turbidimetric flagship analyser with over 40 IVDR / FDA approved assays and a pipeline of other assays. Included in this suite of products is EXENT, a first in class MALDI-based system for the identification, characterisation, and quantification of monoclonal immunoglobulins in patients with monoclonal gammopathies. Our immunoassays are underpinned by an authoritative understanding of polyclonal antibody production, purification, and optimization, in addition to conjugating the immunoglobulins onto latex microspheres.

To continue the innovation momentum and support the establishment of The Binding Site as a leader in Specialty Protein measurements this role will:

  • Lead, coach and mentor the R&D Assay Development department, consisting of R&D Managers and individual contributors.

  • Complete defined R&D goals and multi-generational project plans.

  • Create and maintain tools for product development and product care of diagnostic products.

  • Drive a coordinated product development process across functions for the portfolio, from concept through commercialization.

  • Ensure design ownership and compliance for the products developed within the framework of the department.

  • Ensure the company is represented externally and to commercial/academic partners when needed.

  • Drive innovation throughout the company, further developing the innovative mentalities of colleagues both within and outside the R&D sphere.

  • Represent R&D amongst senior leadership.

Reporting into the VP, R&D at our Birmingham UK location, this is an office-based position (4 days p/w) with up to 50% travel requirement.

Education

  • Degree in a scientific discipline or engineering, preferably with MSc or PhD in immunology or biotechnology

Experience

  • 10 years of relevant technical and leadership experience

  • Experience of assay development for diagnostic tests in an IVD regulated environment

  • Experience leading managers and managing budgets

  • Experience leading large projects from inception to launch

  • Proven track record of innovation

  • Proficiency in English (reading and technical writing)
