Deputy Director, Creative Hub

Location: This role can be based in either Birmingham, Leeds or London. Travel between sites will be required for this position. We currently work on a hybrid basis with 40% of our time working in an office location.

Salary: c. £85,000

For existing Civil Servants, the usual pay rules should apply, i.e. if moving on level transfer the salary will remain the same, if successful on promotion the salary will be the higher of either 10% pay increase or the pay band minimum.

Transport is also changing faster than at any time in living memory – and the way we communicate as a department is changing just as quickly. The Creative Hub is a new group within the Communications Directorate of DfT. The Hub was created to bring together the creative disciplines of digital, design, writing, and strategy to deliver exciting and innovative communication, engaging new and existing audiences for DfT. The Hub delivers cutting edge communications supporting the work of our ministers and the department and is poised to establish itself more fully and cohesively in 2023.

As the leader of the Creative Hub, the Deputy Director will shape its culture and identity, managing a diverse group of professionals to really think about how we best tell our story to the widest possible audience. You will also advise the Secretary of State and Ministers on all creative communications including digital, writing and visits on high-profile and often controversial issues. You will be expected to provide strong professional leadership, support and challenge across the communications team, as part of the senior management team and will also use the role to champion diversity and inclusion.

As the ideal candidate, you’re not afraid to take a risk and you are always looking to be innovative. You’ll be equally at home managing a talented and ambitious team of communications professionals as you are at engaging senior stakeholders. You’ll have proven success in designing and leading innovative content strategies showcasing innovation and creativity. You will possess a desire to continuously optimise and improve the content experience promoting user testing, research and data in the team. Showing us evidence of your political awareness and professional judgement, with a proven track record of providing clear, balanced advice at a senior management level will be key.
