Department of Ecoscience, Section of Wildlife Ecology at Aarhus University is seeking tenure track researchers in quantitative analysis of avian and mammalian movement ecology and population dynamics in Northern Europe.Expected start date and duration of employmentThese are permanent positions and we need our new colleagues to start on September 1st, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.Job descriptionThe Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University is seeking researchers for tenure track positions to undertake research and consultancy within the field of quantitative analysis of avian and terrestrial mammal movement ecology and population dynamics in Northern Europe. The position will be placed in the Section for Wildlife Ecology.Responsibilities:

  • To significantly strengthen the analytical and statistical skills of the department with an emphasis on e.g. spatial modelling, movement ecology, bioacoustics and deep learning.
  • To play a central role in contributing to the department’s research and advisory profile on birds and terrestrial mammals, with an emphasis on their interaction with human activities, e.g. offshore wind energy development, recreational disturbance, etc.
  • To interact with ongoing modelling and simulation initiatives for birds and mammals across the department.
  • To engage in interdisciplinary research, collaborating with colleagues within and outside the department.

We are seeking candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • A PhD degree and an established track record of publications in high-impact peer-reviewed international journals.
  • A broad publication record within the topics of behaviour, habitat selection, population ecology, and bioacoustics of birds or terrestrial mammals.
  • A solid theoretical and practical statistical background and proven experience in organising and analysing large datasets, e.g. bio-logging, camera and bioacoustic data.
  • Experience with programming languages and high-performance computing is an advantage.
  • Experience with new computational methods to track the movement and population dynamics of birds or mammals.
  • A good understanding of the population ecology of Danish bird or mammal species.
  • Readiness to undertake interdisciplinary research teamwork and acquire independent research funding.
  • Proven experience in project planning and coordination, including conduction of fieldwork.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English; knowledge of Danish or another Scandinavian language is an advantage.

Who we areThe Department of Ecoscience is engaged in applied research and advisory work for authorities covering the major biological subdisciplines. We conduct research in the areas of conservation biology and wildlife management, aquatic biology and ecology, and biodiversity. The Department currently employs approximately 275 academic and technical staff, as well as PhD students, distributed at two geographical locations in Aarhus and Roskilde. As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years.
