Job description:

Through cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATTER, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) solves some of the pressing societal and industrial challenges of our time. The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions. The institute hosts an Helmholtz AI YIG “AI for Photon Sciences” which is developing digital twins of our Laser-driven plasma accelerators as well as beamlines. 

The YIG is looking for a Data Scientist (w/m/d) Machine Learning for explainable Digital Twins. The position will be available from 1 April 2023. The employment contract is limited to 21 months.

Your tasks:

# Research generalization of surrogate models by introduction of prior physical knowledge into the generative model or objective function
# Implement simulation-based inference workflow for inversion of a Free-Electron Laser beamline
# Visualization of 1) point cloud data (electrons) and 2) learnt correlations of the generative model (explainable Al)
# Integration of code into our ML framework NF4IP
# Proactive collaboration with theoretical physicists to translate knowledge and code into upcoming simulation campaigns
# Publish papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals in Physics and applied Machine Learning

Your profile:

# Master´s or Diploma degree in Computer Science, Computational Modeling and Simulation, Physics or a closely related discipline
# Preferably: experience in surrogate modeling of beamlines (beam transport, injector, undulator, .. .)
# Good programming skills (python, preferably: pytorch)
# Good mathematical background
# Topics of interest include: Machine Learning, Deep Generative Models, Scientific Visualization, explainable Al
