Job descriptionAs a Cyclotron Engineer (operator) you operate the cyclotron for internal and external customers who want to perform irradiations. You will learn how to operate the cyclotron, how to maintain and improve various systems around the cyclotron and how to resolve malfunctions. The cyclotron has many sub-systems; cooling, compressed, vacuum systems, beam monitoring, Radiofrequency (RF), cryogenics as well as (control-)electronics (including PLCs) and power supplies for magnets. Within the position you can direct your own specialization to cover one or several of these areas. A few systems must remain in operation 24/7. After sufficient training you will be asked to join the emergency response team to react to any problem to these systems occurring outside of office hours.- You are an engineer looking for a challenging and versatile working environment: MBO-4/HBO Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or similar expertise.Working environmentThe University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen (UG) are joining forces in proton therapy R&D with the aim to create a world-class research program. The Particle Therapy research Center is a key facility for the radiation biology and medical physics research in this program. Its research capabilities are currently being expanded with a new infrastructure for image guided preclinical radiation biology research.The accelerator facility consists of the superconducting cyclotron (AGOR) that delivers beams of ions ranging from protons to bismuth ions with a variable energy to several experimental stations dedicated to specific types of experiments. The accelerator provides beams not only for medical research but also for research in subatomic physics and works in collaboration with industrial partners, on the topics of radiation hardness testing of electronic components and sensors. Our technical support team’s focus is to meet the current and future requirements of the local, national and international user community that depends on the accelerator and the associated experimental infrastructure for their research.

It concerns an employment contract for the duration of one year (36 hours per week), with the prospect of extension. The starting salary has a maximum of € 4.259,- gross per month on the basis of full-time employment (scale 8) and depends on education and experience. .Compensation for working irregular hours and consignment services takes place in accordance with the aforementioned collective labour agreement.
