Consultant (Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling Technical Expert) – Survivor Engagement

The consultant delivered the following outputs: A) Input provided to the drafting of internal guidelines for UNODC’s engagement with survivors. B) Drafted an engagement strategy with local NGOs and networks in the Global South, addressing gaps and required actions identified. C) Reviewed and contributed to the concept note and terms of reference for the Global Forum of Human Trafficking Survivors. D) Mapped survivor inclusion initiatives and survivor organizations at local and regional level. E) Attended remotely or in person (in consultation with supervisor) meetings of local organizations (four meetings) F) Conducted capacity-building workshops and training sessions for local organizations and stakeholders on survivor meaningful engagement and inclusion, trauma-informed care, and survivor-centered approaches. G) Held bi-weekly meetings with UNODC to discuss progress, gaps identified and propose course of action. All outputs met the satisfaction of UNODC according to the specific tasks, quality of work and timeliness of delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Team Leader of the UNODC HTMSS Child Trafficking, Survivor Engagement and Partnerships Team, and the direct, day-to-day supervision of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer, responsible for the implementation of this activity, the Consultant will perform the following specific tasks: • Provide input to an internal guidance on engagement with survivors. • Provide inputs to mapping of survivor inclusion initiatives and identification of survivor organizations at local and regional level. • Identify and liaise with such organizations during implementation of the project. • Provide expert input and support in promoting networking and meetings with survivor-led organizations and other local relevant civil society organizations. • Contribute to the development and conceptualization of the Global Forum of Human Trafficking Survivors. • Hold regular meetings with UNODC and help in the identification of gaps and required action in relation to survivor inclusion. • Conduct capacity-building workshops and training sessions for local organizations and stakeholders on survivor meaningful engagement and inclusion, trauma-informed care, and survivor-centered approaches.

Qualifications/special skills

Education – An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, criminology, international relations, humanitarian studies, public relations, human rights or related field is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Working experience – A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in the fields of international relations, criminal justice, criminal law, human rights, and/or rule of law is required; – Good knowledge of local, regional and global human trafficking issues and developments is required; – Experience in the development of human trafficking policies, national referral mechanisms and related research is required; – Experience in delivery of training and capacity building activities in trafficking in persons including victims’ identification and survivors’ inclusion and engagement is required; – Experience in engaging with networks of survivors of trafficking in persons is required; – Project management or experience in conducting implementation of projects activities is desirable ; – Experience working with civil society and survivors of trafficking in persons in the Global South, such as Africa, is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other official UN languages is an asset.
