A clinical position as consultant of anaesthesiology at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Trauma Centre, Centre of Head and Orthopaedics at Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet is open for appointment from as soon as possible.The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Anaesthesiology with special focus on emergency anaesthesia and traumatology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.The advertisement for the professorship is available from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen ( )ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTThe Department of Anaesthesiology is responsible for a wide range of functions: Anaesthesia and surgical assistance, hyperbaric medicine, pain management, trauma reception, organisation of the physician-staffed prehospital critical care unit, education, and research.​ The department provides anaesthesia and surgical assistance for the following specialities at Rigshospitalet:

  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Ear-nose-throat surgery
  • Plastic and burns surgery
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Eye surgery

Each year the department provides anaesthesia for about 19.000 procedures.The Trauma Centre at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet is a highly specialized unit that receives severely injured (> 1.000 patients/year) and acutely ill patients (450 patients/year) from the eastern part of Denmark. Furthermore, seriously burned patients from all over Denmark are received for treatment at the Burns Centre (250 patients/year). The emergency department (restricted access) is treating 12.000 patients/year.Clinical functions and focus areas of the department.The main clinical responsibilities of the Department of Anaesthesiology​ are anaesthesia for:Orthopaedic surgery (9 operating rooms)Ear-nose-throat surgery, eye surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery (15 operating rooms)Plastic surgery and burns (6 operating rooms)The post-operative Care Unit has 40 bedsThe Trauma Centre:Care of the injured or severely ill patient often begins outside hospital as the patient is treated by a doctor on scene and on route. When arriving to Rigshospitalet, the patient is taken directly to the Trauma Suite. Here our trauma or acute team receives the patient. A specialist in anaesthesiology from our department attends the trauma team and will be the leader of the team. After the trauma team has diagnosed and stabilized a patient’s injuries (primary and secondary survey), the patient may be admitted to the hospital. If necessary, the patient can undergo operation in the resuscitation area, or the patient is brought to the specialty specific operating room.Research and teachingWith the new position as consultant in Anaesthesiology and clinical professor of Anaesthesiology with special focus on emergency anaesthesia and traumatology the Department of Anaesthesiology and Trauma Centre wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching with special a special focus on emergency anaesthesia, traumatology, perioperative medicine, and/or anaesthesia.QualificationsApplicants must be board-certified specialist in Anaesthesiology. The applicant must be able to document experience in providing anaesthesia for highly complex surgical patients.Considerably clinical practical knowledge in handling severely injured and/or perioperative patients is an essential requirement for the applicant. As a consultant, the individual is expected to manage medical care, including providing anaesthesia when necessary, for these patients.The applicant must be able to document special research interest and experience in emergency anaesthesia, traumatology, perioperative medicine and / or anaesthesiology. The applicant is expected to formulate a research plan with research questions in combination with playing an active role in implementation of research findings.ConditionsIn order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet.Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region and University of Copenhagen.As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the department of Anaesthesiology and Trauma Centre. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the department of Anaesthesiology and Trauma Centre.
