We are the UK’s aviation regulator, responsible for keeping passengers and the general public safe. Recognised as a world leader in our field, we are at the cutting edge of the exciting and ever-changing aviation environment. Never standing still our work includes diverse activities such as:

  • Driving world-class safety standards.
  • Managing security risks, safeguarding passengers and the general public.
  • Minimising the environmental impact of aviation on local communities.
  • Running the ATOL holiday financial protection scheme.
  • Making sure consumers have choice and protection when they fly.

The ATOL Compliance & Enforcement team helps ensure travel businesses meet their regulatory obligations and that consumers receive the protections they are entitled to. We monitor compliance with ATOL Regulations and consumer protection laws, and where issues arise, we work with businesses to put things right or take enforcement action. We also collaborate with enforcement bodies such as the police and Trading Standards.

The Role

As a Compliance & Enforcement Adviser, you will help identify and investigate risks to consumers and support actions that improve compliance across the travel industry.

You will analyse information, participate in inspections and audits, give advice on ATOL and consumer protection requirements, and help prepare evidence‑based recommendations for regulatory or enforcement action.

Core Accountabilities

  • Reviewing information and intelligence to identify risks and determine areas requiring the team’s focus.
  • Conducting reviews and taking part in inspections and audits to assess whether businesses providing flight accommodation comply with ATOL and consumer protection laws.
  • Providing clear and practical advice to stakeholders on ATOL requirements and consumer protection obligations.
  • Supporting the preparation and presentation of evidence‑based recommendations to managers and legal teams.
  • Helping to deliver enforcement outcomes – ranging from education and training through to enforcement, licence decisions, or supporting criminal proceedings where necessary – and ensuring agreed remedial actions are completed and cases are closed promptly.
  • Collaborating across CMG/CAA and with external enforcement bodies to strengthen oversight and drive compliance.

If you have experience in compliance, investigations, audit, Trading Standards, fraud investigation or another regulatory or consumer‑focused area, this could be a great next step in your career.

About You:

Essential:

  • Experience in compliance, investigations, audit or another regulatory environment (or transferable experience from similar disciplines).
  • A good understanding of regulatory or legal frameworks – ideally in consumer protection (knowledge of ATOL would be helpful but is not essential as training can be provided.)
  • Clear and confident written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues simply and influence thinking and decision making at all levels of an organisation.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, especially when assessing evidence or reviewing information.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and handle sensitive or challenging situations.
  • Good relationship‑building skills, with a collaborative and respectful approach.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Desirable:

  • An understanding of the aviation market and associated challenges for businesses and consumers.
  • Previous line management experience is not essential, although you should be able to demonstrate an ability to coach, motivate and mentor others effectively.

What can we offer you?

You’ll be working within a great team and will benefit from a supportive working environment. We build a friendly atmosphere and have a genuine skills diversity across our team (technical experts, regulatory experts, auditors). We’ll assist you in being able to take pride in producing your best work.

This role will give you the opportunity to develop your investigative skills and broaden your experience of different regulatory approaches, as well as build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The role offers variety as in addition to desk based reviews of tour operators’ compliance, there will be visits to businesses to carry out reviews of their processes and procedures.

If you are a person for whom the idea of equality and fairness are a key part of your personality and are driven towards doing the right thing for consumers, then this is an excellent opportunity for you.

We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office, before we start our property search. We will sell Aviation House and land, vacate the site and move to new premises, but we do not expect to move before 2028
