The Cloud Infrastructure Test Engineer role will sit within Social Security Scotland’s Chief Digital Office (CDO), which has a remit to provide infrastructure and systems to support both the wider social security programme and Social Security Scotland, including:

DDaT Pay Supplement

This post attracts a £5,000 DDaT pay supplement after a 3 months DDaT competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are temporary payments designed to address recruitment and retention issues caused by market pressures and are subject to regular review. This post is part of the Scottish Government DDaT profession. As a member of the profession, you will join the professional development scheme, currently BCS RoleModel plus. 

Job description

The Cloud Infrastructure Test Engineer role will focus on the testing of Social Security Scotland’s AWS hosted infrastructure. Within the Chief Digital Office’s DevOps function, the Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will be led by the Infrastructure Test Manager and will be part of a team of Infrastructure Test Engineers. Their main tasks will include:

  • Delivering infrastructure testing solutions, both manual and automated, for a wide range of project deliverables within the Chief Digital Office.
  • Ownership of testing deliverables for individual or multiple work streams or scrum teams.
  • Lead and own the manual and automated testing practices where/when required to support the Infrastructure Test Manager and other Test Engineers in the team.
  • Developing automated test scripts to supplement the existing test framework, following a risk-based infrastructure testing approach which is aligned to the Infrastructure Test Strategy.
  • Adopting a standardised approach to test preparation and execution of all infrastructure testing across the programme.
  • Developing a continuous integration test pipeline for regression test purposes.
  • Supporting the Non-Functional Testing function within the Test Practice, including continuous process improvement.

The Cloud Infrastructure Test Engineer will have strong & expert manual and automated test design & development skills. Ideally, they will have previous experience of testing the ‘Development of a Cloud Infrastructure solution as it was being built’ rather than testing the applications and services hosted on an infrastructure that is already built. You will have infrastructure testing experience in a Cloud hosting solution with AWS, including knowledge and hands-on experience of the following:

  • Apply test driven development practices for infrastructure to help the team to prevent defects.
  • Elaborating test requirements for a given infrastructure to test AWS services in a shared component architecture.
  • Expertise in designing, developing and execution of manual and automated infrastructure tests.
  • Documenting the processes, procedures, and ways of working to maintain testing artefacts.
  • Good understanding of Infrastructure as Code (IAC) and its implementation using Terraform, Packer, Docker, Jenkins, GitLab, Manifests & Recipes.
  • Defining, designing, and implementing test techniques to certify VPC, ALB/NLB, Security Groups, Proxies, Gateways, EC2, S3, IAM and other typical components in an AWS environment.
  • Expert skills, experience, and knowledge of designing, developing, and implementing automated test framework for infrastructure testing.
  • Knowledge of Test Frameworks suitable for infrastructure testing. i.e. Ruby based Chef InSpec (or similar).
  • Ability to enrich the Infrastructure as Code (IaC) develop by DevOps / Cloud Engineers.
  • Design & develop continuous integration & deployment pipelines for testing with Jenkins or similar.
  • Ensure security policies are applied and run on a regular basis.

Hands on experience of:

  • Linux / Unix and Windows Server.
  • DevOps approach to delivery including relevant testing practices.
  • Embedding testing into the CI/CD process including Terraform deployments or similar.
  • Static testing techniques that help to prevent defects prior to development commencing.

Desirable skills include:

  • Ansible, Containers, CloudFormation.
  • Jira, Confluence, qTest, ALM, Quality Center or similar test management tools.
  • ELK / monitoring.
  • Operational Acceptance Testing (OAT) practices.
  • Prior experience of working on a large programme comprised of multiple vendors.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with a proven ability to use them to ensure that the correct tests are identified during the design activity.
  • 3 amigos style collaboration to reach common understanding of requirements, success criteria and test criteria.

1. Infrastructure testing experience in a Cloud hosting solution with AWS, including knowledge and hands-on experience of applying test driven development practices for infrastructure.

2. Elaborating test requirements for a given infrastructure to test AWS services in a shared component architecture.

3. Expert skills, experience, and knowledge of designing, developing, and implementing automated test framework for infrastructure testing.

4. Hands on experience of Linux / Unix and Windows Server, embedding testing into the CI/CD process including Terraform deployments or similar and Static testing techniques that help to prevent defects prior to development commencing.
