According to FAO it is estimated that around one third of the food produced for human consumption (i.e. 1.3 billion tons) are lost or wasted globally per year with significant impacts on the three sustainability pillars (environment, society and economy), becoming a specific target of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, this target (number 12.3), aims to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, by 2030”. In order to achieve this target a previous indispensable step is to understant better the causes behind the problem as well as to provide evidences about the real impact of the current FLW prevention strategies.
The main objective of this research position is to make progress in the knowledge about the FLW problem by means of the development of data-driven models in order to identify behavioral patterns, analyze causes, and evaluate the efficiency of food loss and waste prevention strategies in terms of sustainability.Objectives of the position? Data analytics for the diagnosis of generation patterns? Design and development of models based on machine learning and system dynamics for the analysis of the impact of food waste prevention strategies? Leading data collection and model design by coordinating multidisciplinary and international work teams? Publishing in high impact journals (WoS and SJR) along with group members? An allocation of 32,985.15 to 42,000 gross euros per year will be granted, distributed into 15 monthly installments, depending on the candidate s experience.? Terms. PhD degree in Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Industrial or similar, with experience in the field of Artificial Intelligence..
