Job description

Department of Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering and Inorganic Chemistry Is the Hosting related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure?NoContact Information Organisation / Company TypePublic Research Institution WebsiteEmail[email protected] State/ProvinceCádiz Postal Code11202DescriptionThe need to find more sustainable industrial manufacturing processes has become a priority objective for many countries, reflected in Sustainable Development Goal 12 ‘Responsible consumption and production’. This is also the basis of the Industry 4.0 concept. One of its enabling technologies is additive manufacturing (AM). Among the AM technologies, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is suitable for producing large metallic parts owing to the high deposition rates achieved. WAAM uses the combination of an electric arc used as a heat source, and a wire employed as a feedstock material. The successive repetition of this wire deposition and melting process results in the printing of the 3D object layer by layer. The cost of the feedstock material is 10% compared to the cost of the same mass in powder form. It has been demonstrated that WAAM has the potential to manufacture a variety of industrial components in many weldable materials.WAAM technique has enormous potential to be used in the repair of parts that have been removed from their application due to failures or breakages, especially in combination with 3D metrology and machining. The University of Cadiz (UCA) has opted for WAAM when creating the Metals Additive Manufacturing Lab of Campo de Gibraltar (ERDF funded). This project aims to drive the transition to the circular economy in the industry by integrating a metal AM process for the repair of medium/large size metal components so that it produces functional final parts with improved behaviour, especially from a mechanical point of view. To achieve this, we propose a combination of WAAM, 3D scanners, CNC machining, and a complete set of characterization techniques. The materials to be considered are mainly different steel grades but could also include other weldable metals. If you are interested in applying for MSCA-PF, please submit by email to (no later than 30th of June 2024) the following documents:1. CV (including complete contact details and list of publications, projects, etc., and describing academic achievements and research expertise, focusing on those aspects relevant in the context of the project).2. Motivation letter (including information concerning your research and career interests and goals, project idea aligned with our research lines and how the candidate will contribute with his/her expertise in the project, and your interests in this call).Share this page
