BloombergNEF Climate-Tech Analyst

London

Posted May 29, 2024 – Requisition No. 125673

BloombergNEF (BNEF) is seeking a talented, highly-motivated individual to join our Technology & Innovation team to develop unique insights that help our clients navigate the opportunities and challenges across the energy transition. Specifically, you will be conducting analysis to assess the commercial readiness of emerging technologies that could impact the energy transition.

BloombergNEF (BNEF) is a strategic research provider covering global commodity markets and the disruptive technologies driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our expert coverage assesses pathways for the power, transport, industry, buildings and agriculture sectors to adapt to the energy transition. We help commodity trading, corporate strategy, finance and policy professionals navigate change and generate opportunities. BNEF has over 250 staff based across the globe.

Our team:

You will be based in our London office, working as part of the Tech & Innovation team at BNEF, with members based in London and New York. Our data-driven research helps clients stay on top of emerging climate-tech. This includes any technologies with the potential for climate mitigation across the energy, transport, industry, agriculture and buildings sector.

BNEF team ethos:

To succeed at BNEF we need people who can work in an independent manner and show initiative to develop their own viewpoints, yet be collaborative with colleagues. We don’t rely on the status quo, we look for innovative yet pragmatic thinking that turns big ideas into real insights and impact. Working at BNEF sometimes feels chaotic; we need teams that are both dynamic and structured to generate the unique perspectives our clients really value. Our teams are diverse, creative, focused, and fun!

What’s the role?

This role will be focused on tracking and assessing the commercial viability of emerging technologies that have the potential to influence climate and industrial systems. Examples of technologies include (but are not limited to): long-duration energy storage, nature-based carbon removal, geological hydrogen, lab-grown proteins and fats, and biofuel production pathways.

The successful candidate will work with our team to identify topics of interest and importance, conduct independent research, build and maintain datasets and models, generate insightful findings, produce written reports of publishable quality, and present the research in webinars and presentations. You will collaborate with colleagues and clients from different cultures and countries, in person and remotely. Periodic travel is expected. You’ll also develop an internal and external network of industry contacts to gather insights, identify trends and collect information. You will work closely with commercial teams to ensure that our cutting-edge research translates into business impact for Bloomberg and BNEF.

We will trust you to:

  • Understand and explain how technologies work, and their potential applications in climate-relevant contexts.

  • Conduct literature reviews to assess the technology readiness of emerging technologies.

  • Collect primary data and conduct interviews to inform your analysis.

  • Outline the competitive landscape of technology providers including both at startups and corporations.

  • Conduct technoeconomic analyses.

  • Write and publish reports to communicate your insights.

  • Collaborate across departments at Bloomberg to ensure that your research reaches as wide an audience as possible.

  • Explain your research to clients via email, telephone and in-person meetings.

  • Deliver presentations at industry events.

You’ll need to have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field

  • A demonstrated interest in understanding the details of how deep tech works, and the impacts of technology innovation on broader economic systems. This experience could be in energy, industry, biotech, or other fields.

  • The ability to think critically and develop thoughtful opinions by cutting through the data, extracting key patterns, applying skepticism to the claims of industry participants and asking insightful questions.

  • Fluent English and good communication skills: writing (for research reports), reading (to conduct research) and speaking (for presentations at conferences, to clients, or to the media).

  • Strong quantitative skills, significant experience using Excel and comfort using large datasets and models.

  • An aptitude for graphically presenting data and writing clearly and concisely to distill and communicate complex topics to non-specialist audiences.

We’d love to see:

  • A familiarity with the decarbonization routes available to different sectors of the economy including energy, transport, industry, agriculture and buildings.

  • An advanced degree in any STEM field relevant to the energy transition.

  • Up to 3 years work experience in a relevant sector.

Apply if you think we’re a good match. We’ll get in touch to let you know that the next steps are, but in the meantime feel free to have a look at:
