JOB DESCRIPTIONWe are looking for an Associate (or Assistant) Professor Critical Global Health to support our multidisciplinary department ‘Health Ethics and Society’(HES) at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.Job description
Origins of poor health in contemporary societies are complex. To make a difference, efforts to address health problems need to take social, political and economic complexities into account and be attuned to both, local realities and globalization processes. Our research line on Health Inequities and Social Participation and our teaching program in Global Health emphasizes looking beyond national boundaries and disciplinary distinctions and to engage with multiple stakeholders to tackle health inequities.Your research should focus on topics relevant in a Global Health context, such as infectious disease/infectious disease control in a broad sense, digital health technologies, health participation in marginalized populations, the health impact of climate change etc. Research on such topics should reside at the interface of science/policies and society with a clear qualitative/participatory/ethnographic style as regards its methodological approach and demonstrate a capacity for conceptual innovation. Interest in multi- and transdisciplinary collaborations, particularly with our partners in Social Medicine and Medical Microbiology is a clear surplus.The Department of Health, Ethics and Society hosts the internationally well recognized Master in Global Health, where we closely collaborate with partner universities in Canada, India, Thailand, Norway, Colombia and Sudan. This program focuses on interacting global-local-biologicalsocial-economic dimensions of health and disease and on the many relationships between (health)technological innovations and societal changes. It provides students with the practical and theoretical skills to effectively navigate this complicated landscape. Each year, more than 100 students attend this Master program. Your teaching responsibilities will cover, among others, the (further) development, coordination and execution of the different elements of our Master program in Global Health.As associate (or assistant) professor joining the Department of Health Ethics and Society you are expected to become an active member of the department and to have clear leading ambitions and capacities. You will perform key roles in teaching, research and management. Your research will be embedded in the research line of Health Inequities and Social Participation (HISP) of the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI). Taking that as your starting point, you are willing to establish close collaborations also with other research groups in the department, across research institutes and among and beyond our Faculty and University.Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conduct high quality research in Critical Global Health with the afore mentioned perspective and on urgent contemporary topics.
  • Acquire, and support to acquire, national and international research funding for own research and on behalf of junior member’s research.
  • Active contribution to all academic activities of the research line in HISP and of the wider departmental research activities.
  • Create social impact and disseminate knowledge and findings to wider audiences.
  • Supervise Master student’s theses and PhD candidates.
  • Develop, coordinate and teach at Bachelor and Master level with a particular focus on Global Health, medical anthropology, philosophy of health, and qualitative research.

Requirements

  • You hold a PhD in the Social Sciences for example sociology, anthropology, Science and Technology Studies (STS) or related disciplines and have a proven interest in Global Health and experience with work in the global south.
  • A strong knowledge in medical ethnography, anthropology, and critical thinking and a standing strong publication record in these fields.
  • Successful supervision of PhDs.
  • Willingness to, and preferably experience with, the leading of multi- and transdisciplinary scientific projects and of teams in research and teaching.
  • Proven experience of high-quality teaching at Bachelor and Master level, also as a developer and coordinator.
  • Experience with academic managerial tasks.
  • Possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) (or foreign equivalents), or a willingness to acquire this within 24 months of employment.
  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English. Candidates who are not fluent in Dutch are expected to learn Dutch in the first years of their employment.

What we offer
As Associate (or Assistant) Professor at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 11 or 12 for Assistant Professor and scale 13 or 14 for Associate Professor, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from € €4,332 and € €6,737 gross per month (Assistant Professor) / € € 6,002 and € € 8,025 gross per month (Associate Professor) (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 or 18 months with a scope of 1.0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
