Birmingham Newman University are looking to appoint to a newly established role of Associate Director (Risk, Resilience and Assurance) within the University Secretary’s Office. This is an opportunity for an experienced and innovative higher education professional to play an important role in enabling the University to achieve its in a way that aligns with its values through providing confident and visible leadership of the University’s new Risk, Resilience and Assurance Team.The postholder will take responsibility for the development and oversight of the delivery of enterprise risk management, compliance and assurance, and operational resilience, working collaboratively to ensure effective integration across academic and service areas, and achieving compliance and mitigating risk without stifling innovation and achievement of the University’s objectives.The new Risk, Resilience and Assurance team of three will initially have a particular focus on supporting development and implementation of frameworks for compliance, assurance and governance oversight in relation to the University’s international strategy (UKVI student route) and its collaborative partnerships (franchise) provision together with updating policy and associated protocols to improve organisational resilience.It is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated individual to secure strong foundations, whilst providing ongoing effective leadership, guidance, and advice. The post holder will work closely with the University Secretary and colleagues across the University as well as with our partners, facilitating collaboration and continuous improvement.The successful candidate should have:

  • A keen desire to further develop their leadership skills within higher education and deploy their change and project management skills within an ambitious institution pursuing substantive growth.
  • An excellent understanding of the regulatory landscape and statutory obligations faced by HEIs, including the requirements of the Office for Students.
  • An ability to develop at pace expertise and understanding of areas of risk, resilience, compliance and assurance that may be new to the postholder and to harness and apply the skills and expertise of colleagues in these areas.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to build networks and relationships and to motivate and influence colleagues to invest time and implement policy and procedures in areas related to the post holder’s portfolio.
  • Knowledge and understanding of UKVI regulations and requirements in relation to the student route.
  • A track record of leading successful development and effective implementation of organisation wide policies and procedures in collaboration with colleagues at all levels and in a way that supports equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • An ability to compile and interpret large, complex data sets to support evidence-based decision-making, risk management and assurance provision.
  • A technology focused approach to working – working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Teams, Sharepoint) and ability to deploy innovative ways of utilising IT and software solutions.
  • Flexible and resilient working practices.
