The Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies at the School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant professorship in archaeology and heritage studies.The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year position, and subject to appropriate funding a subsequent associate professorship will be announced in open competition.
The position is available from 1 January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.The position We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate who will contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.The Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies seeks an applicant able to formulate a strong forward vision for research and teaching in the field of archaeology, the field of heritage studies, or both. We emphasize high-quality research and attach great importance to interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the potential to attract external research funding. The candidate should have a relevant specialization to contribute to teaching within the department’s degree programmes.Research qualifications will be assessed in relation to the period of active research, the degree of originality, excellence, and academic output. We seek an applicant with an ambition to contribute to the discipline’s societal and policy impact outside academia.We look for a candidate who is willing to look flexibly across and connect fields within and beyond the department. We ideally seek a candidate who academically positions themselves between archaeology and heritage studies and who is willing to connect those fields with their research.
Candidates are encouraged to formulate a vision as to their potential contribution to the department’s research profile and environment.Education The successful applicant will be expected to teach and supervise students at undergraduate and graduate level in both archaeology and heritage studies, and to contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods and curricula in both fields.Candidates are encouraged to formulate a plan as to their potential role in the department’s teaching programs.The successful applicant can expect to teach courses in both English and Danish (see below for the Faculty of Arts’ language policy).Applicants for the assistant professorship will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching especially designed for assistant professors.Knowledge exchange (alternatively ‘societal and policy impact’) It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors and the public dissemination of knowledge.
