Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws 2021, item 478 as amended) and the Statute of the University of Lodz.The EUROBORDERWALKS This is an interdisciplinary and international research project that aims to map and analyse social phenomena and processes taking place on three borders on the periphery of the European Union affected by past and/or current crises: Croatia/Bosnia and Herzegovina; Poland/Ukraine, Republic of Ireland/Northern Ireland. The project combines sociological research (conducted through participatory ethnography, autobiographical narrative interviewing and walking sociology) with the work of artists/photographers documenting the everyday reality of these areas and the people who live, work or help there. With a focus on the bottom-up perspective and the experiences of ordinary people, the research will critically reflect on the concerns of the inhabitants and the institutions of the European Union about border security, especially with regard to ‘irregular’ migration, growing nationalism, the threats and risks posed by the sealing of the border, but also its softness and porosity. These issues are particularly important in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the UK’s exit from the EU, and should involve a review of fair mobility, refugee and consequently EU social policy planning.KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe successful candidate will:
- Play a lead role in achieving the project’s overall goals in Lodz on each of the project’s four work packages, by developing theoretical, methodological and ethno-mimetic innovations in order to conduct a deep biographical mapping of each border, as well as comparative analysis.
- Conduct and lead the programme of research in Poland under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator in collaboration with academic partners in Cork and Zagreb.
- Participate fully in taking operational responsibility for the project in Lodz. This will include research design, fieldwork, analysis, stakeholder engagement, event organisation, public communication, and dissemination of the project’s goals and findings to academic, policy, and wider stakeholders under the supervision of the PI.
- Engage in appropriate and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, Research Institute.
- Assume a role in the design as well as the execution of research.
- Support the Principal Investigator and research group in the design and development of the research programme.
- Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research, as directed by and with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
- Interact closely with the postgraduate research student who is conducting PhD research on the Irish Border.
- Conduct administrative and management work associated with the research project.
- Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
- Proactively, and with the support of the Principal Investigator, take primary responsibility for ongoing personal, professional and career development opportunities.
- Engage in the wider research activities of the Research Group, School or University.
CRITERIA
- A PhD qualification and competence and experience in a research area relevant to EUROBORDERWALKS. (Essential)
- Bi lingual in Polish/English (Essential), knowledge of Ukrainian would be an asset
- Have a sociology/social science background with a focus on qualitative research, biographical research and analysis including stakeholder engagement processes.(Essential)
- Have experience in interdisciplinary research with the ability to engage across disciplines and practices (sociology, biographical research and arts practice).(Essential)
- Have demonstrated team working, networking, writing, communication, and research skills appropriate to the project’s overarching goals. (Essential)
- Peer Reviewed Publications (desirable)
- Previous experience with stakeholder engagement methodologies, particularly with policy makers, to enable systemic change is desirable. (Desirable)
