Job description

The Digital Design Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites candidates for Assistant/Associate Professorships. The proposed starting date is Summer 2024.

The Department of Digital Design researches and teaches the design of digital technologies and services with a positive impact on society, industry, and climate in domains like public sector, health, welfare, and games.

Job Description
The applicant should have solid experience with research and teaching in creative programming and design-oriented coding both in terms of hardware and software. The applicant should have the capacity to introduce creative programming to design students who come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds through a variety of formats such as classroom teaching, seminars, and workshops. This requires a skillset within industry standard web technology including HTML, CSS, Javascript and specifically creative coding libraries like p5js and Node.js and lightweight IoT messaging protocols; Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or other physical computing tools; or similar (open source) interactive tools and platforms like Processing. In addition, the applicant should be qualified in at least one of the following areas:

  • Aesthetic, critical and practical explorations of technology, computation and design in relation to creative programming and interaction design
  • Conceptual and material integration of emerging technology into creative practices and design, including experience with a variety of data-centric digital materials, such as internet data, machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Open-ended and experimental design processes and design research for example in relation to technological frameworks within IoT, human-AI collaboration and creativity support tools.

The assistant professorship is a temporary position for up to 3 years with the possibility of extension. The position requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

In addition, for Associate Professor position, candidates should be able to:

  • Attract external research funding
  • Supervise PhD students
  • Read/speak a Scandinavian language (or have the willingness to learn Danish)

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

About the Digital Design Department
Digital Design is organized in three sections; Design Research, Play, Culture and AI, and Digital Societies and Participation. The sections serve as the organizational framework for the department’s research which is further divided into several research groups, labs, and a research center. We offer a BSc and MSc in Digital Design and Interactive Technologies and a MSc in Games. Our research and teaching approaches are based on diversity, inclusiveness interdisciplinarity and collaboration.

Salary and terms of employment
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Taxation’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and job structure for academic staff at Universities.

  • For candidates applying for the Associate professor position: documentation of a) received observation and feedback on teaching, b) pedagogical experience and training courses as a teacher, c) a formal written assessment of teaching competence and d) a teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position
  • For candidates applying for the Associate professor position: a record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which the candidate has worked, for example participation in committees, etc.

The applicant will be accessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 13 March 2012.

The IT University may use shortlisting in connection to the recruitment process. In case of shortlisting, the Chair of the hiring committee selects applicants for assessment in consultation with the hiring committee after the application deadline. All applicants are notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The shortlisting of candidates for assessment is based on the criteria in the job posting.
