Assistant/Associate Professor Additively Manufactured FRP Composites in Engineering Structures
Offer DescriptionBridges and wind turbine towers are two main areas in need of resilient high-performance materials. Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are showing great promise. Yet to meet future demand, it is crucial to develop technologies to sustainably produce resilient FRP structures in high volumes. As an assistant or associate professor in additively manufactured FRP composites, you will get the opportunity to develop a truly unique research line. Would you like to drive the transformation from manual to automated manufacturing applications in the construction sector with experimental and numerical research geared to support ‘3D printed’ FRP structures?Automated and additive manufacturing (AM) techniques could resolve the current production and quality control limitations of FRP composite structures. To ultimately develop high-volume ‘3D printing’ methods, you will generate knowledge of the mechanical performance of AM FRP materials. You will develop novel multi-scale experiments, advanced measuring methods and physics-based AI-aided numerical methods for predicting performance of additively manufactured FRP structures. To enable your research, our Macro Mechanics Laboratory is at your disposal. You will attract funding from government authorities, the Dutch Research Council or industrial partners, and build and supervise your team of PhD students. You will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate students and collaborate with other faculty members to supervise thesis projects. You will join our internationally diverse and inclusive team of world-recognized leading scientists in Steel and Composite Structures (SCS) research. Contributing to our reputation, you will disseminate your knowledge at leading conferences and in scientific papers, and further expand our network. Developing resilient and sustainable (infra)structures, we share the Engineering Structures department’s drive to meet societal demands related to transportation, the energy transition and sustainable reuse. As a welcoming and collaborative group of 20+ academics, PhD students, postdocs, project leaders and master students, we will give you all the support, training and coaching you need to develop your academic career. Depending on your level of seniority, you yourself will coach more junior colleagues. The Department of Engineering Structures focuses on the development of resilient, smart and sustainable structures and infrastructures. Our aim is to meet societal demands in transportation, the energy transition and sustainable reuse. Research themes include dynamics of structures, mechanics of materials related to e.g. climate change, modelling and design of railway systems, multi-scale modelling of pavement materials and structures, reuse of materials, structures and parts of structures, assessment methods for structures, smart monitoring techniques, design methods, replacement and renovation of civil infrastructure and development of new materials and maintenance techniques. Our unique Macro Mechanics Laboratory facilities support full-scale testing, monitoring and modelling of structures to facilitate implementation of innovations. The department delivers both groundbreaking research and world-class education for undergraduate and graduate students. As a team, we represent different backgrounds, skills and views. We foster an inclusive culture, as our combined identities, attitudes and ambitions widen our perspective and make up our strengths.RequirementsSpecific Requirements
