UCLouvain seeks to recruit

A full-time academic in Production and Operations Management

Main campus: Mons

About us

UCLouvain is in the top 1% of universities worldwide. Founded in the heart of Europe in 1425, the university brings together 40,000 students and 6,000 staff members on nine campuses in Brussels and Wallonia. Research and education activities are organised in 14 faculties, 22 research institutes, five learning centres and 18 libraries. UCLouvain also has two university hospitals.

UCLouvain is a major player in the transition to a sustainable society. The challenges of the ecological crisis are integrated into courses and the university develops numerous local projects (such as a university farm and sustainable campuses). As a digital university, UCLouvain is involved in open science and education, and trains academics in innovative teaching practices through its Louvain Learning Lab. Thanks to two science parks, the university’s research benefits from interaction with 250 companies and three incubators, which is fuelled further by being at the centre of a region driven by technological innovation.

UCLouvain has a long tradition of international collaborations for teaching and research through partnerships across the world. As a member of the Circle U. European University alliance, the university offers a unique opportunity to work in an environment of interconnected campuses across Europe (London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Pisa, Belgrade, Aarhus and Oslo).

The university has a gender and inclusion policy which prioritises equity and respect. Working at UCLouvain means contributing to the development of every individual’s skills and promoting the values of equality, transparency and efficiency.

The position is attached to the Faculty of Louvain School of Management and the Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics. EQUIS accredited and member of the CEMS and PIMS alliances, LSM was founded in 1897 and became a faculty on its own in 2010. It offers bachelor, master, doctoral and life-long learning programmes at the sites of Louvain-la-Neuve, Mons, Charleroi and Brussels. It has 56 permanent professors, 43 research assistants and 2,500 students.

Post description

Within the Faculty of  Louvain School of Management and the Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics, Social Sciences and Humanities Sector, the post duties include teaching, research and service activities:

  • Teaching

You will teach mainly in the field of production and operations management, as well as quantitative deterministic methods (operations research) within the domain OIS (operations and information systems) at the site of Mons, but you may also be assigned teaching in other programmes of the faculty or sites. You will also direct master’s theses in your area.
LSM adopts a student-oriented learning philosophy based on interactivity, applied cases, student projects and continuous assessment. Courses are developed using a competency framework. Each teacher develops an individual pedagogical development pathway, supported by the Louvain Learning Lab and additional funds for pedagogical innovation projects, to be implemented over a five-year period.  The personal professional development enables each teacher to be effective for different audiences (bachelor, master, doctorate), sites and formats (lectures, seminars, evening classes, MOOCs, project courses).
The standard teaching load for an appointed professor (tenured) at LSM is defined as follows: one course in the bachelor programmes, one general core course in the master 120 programme, one master course in the specialization major associated with an area of research expertise, and an additional course in another programme and/or a course at another UCLouvain site.

  • Research

You will develop your research activities, including the animation of research programs, in the field of operations management, and more generally of operational research. You will supervise doctoral theses in this field.
You are an expert in one or more mathematical methods such as: Markov Chain Monte Carlo, queuing systems, stochastic simulation, data visualization, data envelopment analysis, continuous optimization, discrete optimization, on-line optimization, stochastic optimization, statistical learning, statistics, machine learning,… applied to operations management: planning, design, procurement, production, coordination, forecasting, process, inventory, S&OP, quality, project management, risk management, reverse logistics, distribution, transportation,…
You will carry out your research activities within the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics.

  • In addition …

Once you are tenured, you will carry out various service activities and responsibilities within the institution, such as being part of a programme committee, an examination or admissions board or other management responsibilities within the faculty or research institute.

You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields. Finally, you will ensure, through research and teaching activities, the university’s international visibility.

Who we’re looking for

  • Education

You have a PhD in Economics and Management Sciences, Operations Research or a comparable field. You have spent an extended study period abroad or significant experience outside your home institution.

  • Experience

You have a proven track record in university teaching, evidenced where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.

  • Skills

You work well as part of a team of teachers and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinarity.
Most master’s and PhD courses are taught in English, which is also the language of research publications.  The candidate must be fully operational in written and spoken English from the start. French is expected to be acquired at last by the time of tenure. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

What we offer

  • Tenure after positive assessment of the probationary period – typically four years. This type of career entitles you to a public sector pension.
  • Appointment as lecturer or professor according to your previous academic experience, as determined by the Rectoral Council.
  • Teaching load capped at 90 hours for a full-time tenure-track position, and 150 hours once tenured.
  • An attractive and progressive salary according to seniority and the promotion process.
  • A start date of 1 September 2024 at the earliest.
  • An integrated leadership and management training programme, including a range of pedagogical, linguistic and other training courses.
