Offer DescriptionThe successful candidate will be part of the UIB Molecular Cell Biomedicine research group and undertake activities linked to lipid-based therapies in cognitive impairment associated with Down Syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer’s, within the field of health under the framework of the group’s area of research: ‘The Research and Development of Lipidbased Therapies for Neurological and Oncological Diseases.The successful candidate will undertake the following research tasks:1. Handling DS transgenic rodent models (Ts65Dn) and associated strains, and maintaining stable colonies at the UIB animal facilities2. Managing wild type (WT) bloodline sample crossbreeding (C57BL/6jEij and C3H/HeSnJ) to create WT animals in first-generation hybrid gene collections (B6EiC3Sn F1) required to maintain the Ts65Dn colony3. Producing Ts65Dn animals and genotyping to verify the presence of chromosome trisomy inherent to DS in the rodent genome4. Characterising the presence of mutations linked to motor deficiencies (Clcc1 gene mutations) and retinal degeneration (Pde6b gene mutations) which could interfere with subsequently obtained results, after these animals receive treatments during the research project5. Designing experimental groups for experiment procedures approved by the Ethics Committee for Animal Experimentation6. Characterising the DS murine model in terms of spatial memory and comparing results with the Family Alzheimer’s Disease model (FAD) known as 5xFAD7. Animal treatment, weight control and daily wellbeing. Treatments will be given orally through an oesophagostomy tube with different designed lipids which have previously demonstrated efficacy in preventing cognitive decline in 5xFAD animals8.
