Offer DescriptionThe successful candidate will be part of the UIB Microbiology research group and undertake the following activities: research the ecological function, distribution and compensations in phytoplankton extracellular structures in marine ecosystems. Phytoplankton produces 25% of the oxygen we breathe and is the basis of the oceans’ food chain. The successful candidate will drive this new study area that arose after the discovery that cyanobacteria use pili to avoid being fully submerged and eaten by protozoa. The research will focus on visualising these structures through advanced microscopy, assessing pili interactions with protozoic and virus predators, and determining the global dispersion of these structures in microorganisms. The results will inform current models on food models, refining our understanding of the role oceans will play in capturing anthropogenic CO2 generation under the framework of future climate chain. The work will be undertaken within the field of Green Employment as part of the group’s area of research into analysing environmentally relevant microbial communities and model organisms, as well as surrounding environmental knowledge (physical, chemical and biological determining factors).The successful candidate will:1. Cultivate marine microorganisms and maintain axenic cultures2. Prepare biological material for viewing with confocal and electronic microscopy3. Cultivate marine cyanobacteria and determine how they interact with viruses and protozoa through flow cytometry and microscopy4. Construct plasmids through genetic engineering5. Create mutant cyanobacteria6.
