Offer DescriptionPostdoctoral researcher – Tobacco control researchRef. 24-148_R_CMAbout the research groupTobacco Control Research GroupThe main objectives of the Tobacco Control research group (Unitat de Control del Tabac in Catalan, UCT) are to foster the current knowledge and evidence on determinants and approaches to prevent and control tobacco use, as well as tobacco smoke and e-cigarette aerosol exposure in the population. To achieve these objectives, the UCT develops interventions and epidemiological and implementation research, which includes projects such as: the impact of passive tobacco exposure in the population, the use of markers to measure tobacco smoke and electronic cigarettes aerosol in the environment or biomarkers, or the implementation of new interventions such as smoke-free homes. On the other hand, the UCT is also responsible for applied intervention projects such as the Catalan Network of Smoke-free Hospitals and health promotion services such as the smoking cessation clinic, which offers support to quit smoking to both employees and patients from ICO-IDIBELL.
The UCT currently maintains stable collaborations with national and international institutions and agencies, mainly with the Catalan Public Health Agency, and including the World Health Organization (WHO), which designated the UCT-ICO as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Control. The UCT is part of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program of ICO and of thr Epidemiology, Public Health and Cancer Control Program of IDIBELL. The UCT is an Accredited research Group by AGAUR (Generlaitat de Catalunya) and it is the core of the Tobacco and Respiratory Health research group within CIBERES (Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Dr. Cristina Martínez is the leader of the Tobacco Control research group and also the coordinator of the PIECES project, funded by the European Union (No. 101104390), which is aimed at improving the implementation of cancer prevention interventions addressing modifiable cancer risk factors: tobacco, alcohol, solar exposure, human papillomavirus, nutrition, and physical activity. More information of the project:About the roleWe seek a motivated Postdoctoral for the PIECES project, which aims to develop, evaluate, and disseminate a methodological framework for implementing cancer primary prevention programs. During the contract, the candidate will be involved in implementing and evaluating various interventions for the main cancer risk factors (such as smoking and secondhand smoke exposure, alcohol drinking, poor diet, lack of physical exercise, lack of HPV vaccination, sun exposure) across diverse settings in Catalonia, including hospitals, universities, and occupational health services as well as writing and publishing the results of such research.Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth interviews, focus groups, and other qualitative methods to gather data on the variables of interest.
- Conduct surveys and utilize various quantitative techniques to collect data on the variables of interest.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data resulting from the study.
- Ensure that ethical considerations are upheld throughout the data collection process.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations summarizing the analysis findings.
- Participate in the PIECES Project annual meetings and other relevant national and international conferences.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to interpret and integrate qualitative and quantitative findings and derive research conclusions.
- Lead and collaborate in the writing of manuscripts of project and align projects.
- Co-write proposals for national and international calls.
Job requirementsEducation and training
- Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, or related social sciences, with expertise in qualitative research methodologies.
- Specialized Knowledge in Public Health: Proficiency in implementation research, with a strong understanding of public health initiatives, health promotion programs, and preventive health strategies.
- Educational Background: A Masters degree in public health, epidemiology, research methods, health promotion, or a closely related field.
Technical & soft skills
- Research Skills: In-depth knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research practices, including ethical standards and best practices across both research approaches.
- Ability to use qualitative softwares (eg. inVivo, Atlas ti) is required.
- Ability to use quantitate softwares (eg. STATA, SPSS, STATA) is desirable.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, capable of conveying complex research findings clearly and effectively to both expert and lay audiences.
- Writing skills (demonstrated experience of writing in peer-review journals and participate in the writing of scientific projects)
Languages
- Good command of the Catalan and English language
- The working languages at the UCT are Catalan, Spanish and English
