WE ARE
The Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) provides the European Commission with high-quality translations of written texts – and other language services – in the EU’s 24 official languages. DGT.C.1.GA.1 is one of two Irish language units in the Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation (DGT). We translate documents drafted by the various Commission services from all EU languages into Irish. The documents cover a wide range of EU related subjects and our unit specialises in particular in financial texts, energy, environment, agriculture, information technology, etc. Our documents include legal acts, policy papers, reports, correspondence with citizens, press releases, brochures, etc.
WE PROPOSE
DGT’s unit GA.1 is seeking to hire one Irish linguistic agent.
The linguistic agent will join a friendly, dynamic team and will work in a pre-dominantly Irishspeaking environment. This post in the Unit’s secretariat involves a broad range of administrative and linguistic responsibilities which will give the successful candidate an opportunity to master the role of linguistic assistant with Irish, as well as a variety of tools and applications in a Directorate- General known for its innovation in the IT field. Full training will of course be offered as necessary. You would be assigned directly to the Head of Unit.
Tasks of the linguistic agent include but are not limited to:
- Supporting the internal management and administrative handling of translation requests in the Unit;
- Providing assistance to translators in the preparation of translations and other language products and in the use of IT tools;
- Supporting the management and handling of outsourced assignments;
- Screening of and pre-processing of originals;
- Finalisation of documents from the point of view of typography and page-layout taking into account the format of the original, as well as consistency between text titles and tables of contents; footnotes, figures, etc.
Managing information and procedures on missions, holidays, leave and absence records and similar personnel formalities;
Providing administrative assistance with job descriptions, appraisal reports, promotion exercises and/or training plans and the recruitment and arrival of new officials;
Providing assistance in the organisation and reporting of meetings, including reservation of rooms, checking/sending agenda, compilation of handouts and drafting and follow-up of minutes;
Facilitating internal communication within the unit and language community as well as with outside stakeholders;
Managing the Unit’s functional mailbox and sending requested information and documents.
WE LOOK FOR
We are looking for an organised, efficient and motivated colleague who would actively contribute to providing linguistic assistance to the translation process, as well as general administrative support to the Unit’s translation team and management.
Excellent spoken and written Irish is essential; very good knowledge of English is also required and knowledge of any other EU official language, French in particular, would be an advantage.
IT proficiency is a must. Knowledge of translation tools such as SDL Trados Studio would be a big advantage as would experience of preprocessing jobs for translation and finalizing texts for delivery.
You should be able to integrate into a team, but also work independently and under pressure when needed. Members of the Secretariat work very closely together and with the Head of Unit. They also provide support to translators and are in frequent contact with colleagues in the horizontal units within DGT and also with external stakeholders. Good communication skills are essential. You should be able and willing to work in a multicultural environment.
