Job title:
Postdoctoral position in bioinformatics/evolutionary genomics (M/F)
Company:
Job description
Offer DescriptionWe offer an 18-month postdoctoral position in bioinformatics/evolutionary genomics to study the genetic basis of sex determination and resistance to vertical transmission of Wolbachia endosymbionts encoded by sex chromosomes in the isopod Armadillidium nasatum.
To this end, the work will consist in analyzing genomic sequence datasets available in our laboratory (nanopore, HiC, poolseq…), including de novo assembling, gene annotation, mapping, SNP and structural variant analyses, etc.Performing bioinformatics analyses of high throughput sequencing data
Reporting results of experiments
Writing scientific articles
Making oral communications at national and international meetingsThis position is funded by ANR project Resist, led by Richard Cordaux. One of the goals of the project is to elucidate the genetic basis and evolutionary consequences of sex determination perturbations induced by Wolbachia endosymbionts in isopod crustaceans. Vertically transmitted through the maternal line, Wolbachia increases its transmission by converting genetic males into phenotypic females in many isopods (Cordaux et al. 2011; Cordaux & Gilbert 2017). This leads to sex ratio biases in favor of females, which causes genetic conflicts favoring the evolution of resistance genes allowing the restoration of balanced sex ratios. We have shown that such a resistance system exists in the isopod Armadillidium nasatum, which blocks Wolbachia vertical transmission (hence restoring males in progenies) and whose genetic basis is associated to sex chromosomes (of the XY/XX type in this species) (Becking et al. 2019).
The hired person will work in collaboration with two scientists (Richard Cordaux and Clément Gilbert) and will benefit from a scientific environment comprising numerous bioinformaticians. More generally, the hired person will have many opportunities to interact with other scientists of the EGCE laboratory and the IDEEV institute. Finally, the hosting group has the dedicated bioinformatics equipment.
Preferred starting date: March 2025 (negotiable)
