The core purpose of the team (10 people) is the development of complex market forecasting models and asset optimisation tools to support EDF Trading proprietary activity and EDF Group portfolio optimisation. The team efforts are directed towards both the Paris based activity in the short-term electricity markets as well as the longer-term horizon and other commodities traded from London. The team works in proximity with the trading desks and other analyst teams in both locations.Position purposeThe main objective of the internship is to improve the hydro modelling of EDFT pan-European long-term price forecasting model, which is used daily by power analysts and traders for EDFT’s proprietary trading activities.Hydroelectric dams are an important part of the electricity generation stack as a renewable source of energy as well as a mean of storing energy, yet their management and their impact on power prices across seasons remains complex to model. The need for flexibility in the context of increased penetration of renewable energy sources have greatly increased the relevance of reviewing the performance and accuracy of our hydro modelling.After getting familiar with power stack models, hydro reservoir optimisation and our existing platform, the intern will explore machine learning approaches to predict the value of water in reservoirs., implement the chosen method and test it on real market data.This is a great opportunity to work on a model used by one of the largest power trading firms in Europe.Main responsibilitiesExplore and propose new methods to complement and challenge the existing approachImplement the candidate methods and carry out tests on real world dataAnalyse results and present them in discussions with power analystsEnsure robust implementation in the modelPersonal and professional requirementsDemonstrated skills in machine learningStrong analytical skillsInterest in energy markets and applied researchCoding skills with an object-oriented programming language (Java/Python)Good communication skillsBeneficial requirements:Knowledge of optimisation/operations research (linear programming)Knowledge of OPL and optimisation solvers (e.g., CPLEX)Duration:6 months, starting March or April 2025Hours of work:9am – 6pm, Monday to Friday
