Job PurposeProject title: ESPRC funded Research Associate in QuSIT, the Uk’s quantum technology hub in sensors imaging and timing.Project description: The appointee will join the EPSRC funded Hub in the UK’s National Quantum Technology Programme, working as a post-doctoral researcher. The focus of the research will be on imaging with undected photons.The Quantum hub in Sensors, Imaging and Timing (QuSIT) will leverage the power of quantum sensing, imaging and timing to address challenges in healthcare, infrastructure, transportation, security, enabling a safer, healthier, and more sustainable society. The QuSIT Hub is one of five Hubs within the UK Government’s National Quantum Technology Programme (UK NQTP), itself a £2.5B/10-year initiative as one of the five National Critical Technologies.QuSIT is a £20M EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) flagship investment to create an international centre of excellence, providing thought, leadership and coordination across the quantum landscape. The hub is also in receipt of additional pledges for funding from the private sector and user groups totalling a further £30M. The research community associated with the QuSIT Hub numbers >35 academic researchers, and 80-100 early career and post-graduate researchers, with resourcing equally distributed between the imaging and sensing components.We strongly encourage applications from a Physics or Engineering background and applications from traditionaly underrepresented groupsMain Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal/Co Investigator:
1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables.
2. Take a leading role in the acquisition, set up, maintenance and integration of experimental apparatus or computational kit, or in setting up theoretical models or analysis strategies.
3. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers.
4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.
5. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops
6. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
7. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team
8. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
9. Make a leading contribution to outreach and recruitment activities of The University of Glasgow.
10. Make a leading contribution to Teaching activities (e.g demonstrating etc) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.
11. Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of Laboratory and/or Experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks which the staff member may be reasonably expected to perform.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/Qualifications
Essential:A1 A PhD (SCQF 12) in Physics or Engineering in (one or more of the) fields of optics, imaging, quantum optics, computational imaging techniques or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in quantum imaging, prefereably using non-linear interferometry.A3 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject areaA4 Knowledge of specialist IT software (eg. Matlab, LabView, or Python)
A5 Knowledge (in one or more) of single photon detectors, image retrieval algorithms, spatial light modulatrs, adative manufacturing of optial configurations, camera/computer interfacing, graphucs card programming.Knowledge and Skills
Essential:C1 Excellent experimental lab skills related to the use of (one or more) light beam shaping, camera technology, quantum imaging, imaging though complex media OR in the use of advanced algorithms for image retrieval
C2 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skillsC3 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills including a track record showing ability to implement automated control of laboratory equipment OR image retrieval or machine learning and artificial neural networks applied to imaging
C4 Experience in public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely C5 Good Team Leadership skills including demonstrable supervisory skillsDesirable:D1 Comfortable developing expertise in multiple fieldsExperience
