Job description

Offer DescriptionThe French-German project CALO5D was recently approved by the French Agence Nationale de Recherche (ANR) and the German Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG) for a period of three years. IJCLab is one of the partners of this project.
CALO5D will combine detailed information on particle showers provided by imaging calorimeters (CALO) with precise time information at the cell level, in addition to space and local energy (5D). The exploitation of the information will be assisted by modern machine learning algorithms and the goal is to improve the performance of energy reconstruction and particle flow algorithms. The capability of the tools will be demonstrated with performance studies on selected physics channels central to the physics case of future Higgs factories. The studies will be carried out with a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (SiECAL) in combination with an analogue hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) based on scintillating tiles readout by silicon-photomultipliers. The result of this project will have a fundamental impact on the design of the next generation high energy physics experiments. To our knowledge, CALO5D will be the first project worldwide to address the application of timing in calorimeters at future Higgs factories in a consistent and coordinated way within a single project. Though the project is autonomous, it is tightly connected to the recently established worldwide Detector R&D Collaboration on Calorimetry DRD Calo. This guarantees an international visibility of the CALO5D project. The postdoctoral researcher will play a central coordinating role in the project. This implies contributing to the correct implementation of timing into the GEANT4 simulation of the SiECAL and to assist the corresponding implementation into the AHCAL. The implementation will be validated with data that has been recorded in the past or will be recorded with existing hardware of both detectors. Further, the postdoctoral researcher will participate in the supervision of one of the PhD Students of the project. Together they will work on the implementation of timing into particle flow algorithms and the exploitation in key physics channels. Finally, the postdoctoral researcher will play a key role in the transfer of the conclusions of the simulation studies into the design of future readout electronics and eventually cooling systems for future highly granular calorimeters. The design considerations will be carried out in close collaboration with engineers and technicians that are members of our teams. The Irène Joliot-Curie Physics Laboratory of 2 Infinities (IJCLab) is a UMR under the supervision of the CNRS (IN2P3), the University of Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris is located on the campus of the University of Paris -Saclay in Orsay.
The research themes of the laboratory are nuclear physics, high energy physics, theoretical physics, astroparticles, astrophysics and cosmology, particle accelerators, energy and the environment and health.
The postdoctoral researcher will work in the ILC group which is a member of the department of high-energy and hadronic physics of the laboratory. The group is involved in hardware and software studies for highly granular calorimeters and physics studies or future e+e- colliders. It consists of three senior physicists and one PhD student. The project will be supported by Machine Learning experts of the ATLAS Group of IJClab and of the IJCLab’s computing department. We have full access to the engineering and computing facilities of IJCLab as well as to computing facilities of CNRS/IN2P3 and the University Paris Saclay.
IJCLab bases its recruitment policy on the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion. These are essential values allowing for the professional development of agents who are true actors of a collective success, but also for the development of the laboratory itself.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Physics Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Physics Years of Research Experience NoneAdditional InformationEligibility criteriaWe expect a PhD in particle physics or a related field, either completed or close to be completed. The successful candidate has carried out an analysis of a physics channel using modern analysis techniques and is familiar with the GEANT4 simulation toolkit. Hardware experience is desired but not a premise. We expect however that the successful candidate will get familiar with hardware aspects to be able to communicate actively on technical aspects of the results.Additional commentsTo apply, submit a covering letter and a CV without any break in date showing diplomas, titles and work and professional experience. Please provide the names of two persons ready to provide a letter of recommendation.
As the position is located in a ZRR (restricted regime zone), recruitment is conditional on obtaining a favorable opinion from the HFSD. Consequently, the start date is specified for information purposes only and may be postponed.
