Job Description
The Position
This role will be the knowledge leader with ability to set strategy and manage a global occupational health program aligned to business needs and to enhancement of the health and well-being of Organon employees. You will understand and interpret occupational health regulations and how they relate to employees and their work. You will develop and oversee implementation of policies, procedures and programs aimed at accomplishment of key employee and occupational health program elements at Organon facilities worldwide. Supported by an Organon Occupational Health Nurse, you will oversee third-party clinics at our manufacturing sites and will ensure appropriate third-party clinic support for office and field staff.
Responsibilities
- Update/refresh Global Occupational Health strategy to ensure it remains fit for purpose for Organon. Centralize (and, where appropriate, standardize) clinical support at manufacturing sites and establish occupational health programmatic approach for field offices.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of hazards in all Company locations.
- When new hazards are identified collaborate with subject experts, including, but not limited to, Safety, Biosafety, Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Radiation Safety, and Legal to develop an appropriate response (procedure, protocol, standard, guideline, or tool).
- Responsible for the effective management of the global Occupational Health (OH) program, team and budget.
- Provide advice and consultation to management on matters of employee health issues (including but not limited to occupational health exposures, injuries, or illnesses; collaboration with Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) team and local vendors to develop appropriate workplace accommodations).
- Ensure that appropriate evaluations are performed (and communicated to management) to determine if employees can safely and effectively accomplish the essential functions of their jobs (e.g., pre-assignment/placement, fitness for duty evaluations).
- Develop collaborative working relationship with site Management, Safety and Industrial Hygiene professionals to facilitate safe working conditions and minimize adverse health effects.
- Participate in routine medical surveillance assessments with management and Safety/Industrial Hygiene to jointly determine if surveillance programs meet requirements for the type and degree of exposure, and the appropriateness of enrollment criteria.
- Drive selection of qualified vendors (in collaboration with key stakeholders) to address site, field and program OH needs.
- Assure that designated OH vendors perform their tasks in conformance with regulatory expectations (local, country and regional regulations), business need (e.g., GMP, Organon Standards), or identified hazard; manage the on-time and on-budget delivery of medical programs; and manage local vendors in collaboration with facility EHS, HR and relevant site leadership teams to ensure compliance.
- Monitor designated vendors in provision of medical care of work-related injuries and illnesses. Where appropriate, participate in management of cases to facilitate early return to health and work. Observe pertinent privacy laws while communicating injury status to Safety and Management.
- Oversee vendor of travel medical services and take calls 24/7 to assist in coordination of best possible medical care for medical emergencies incurred by business travelers.
- Responsible for the effective management of audit ready activities to ensure OH compliance on all sites. Define audit schedule; ensure formal OH audits of vendors and sites are completed and gaps addressed in a timely manner.
Required Education, Experience and Skills
- MD is required.
- At least eight years of experience in Occupational Health; in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and/or petroleum production is preferred.
- Knowledge and vision of what a strong OH program looks like, within international context.
- Medical knowledge and expertise for global oversight and management for the following areas are a plus:
- Corporate-wide health promotion, disease prevention and detection programs;
- Vendor supplied core services;
- Compliance with all company, country, and local governmental regulations and other requirements related to occupational and employee health matters;
- Privacy and management of employee health information; and
- Quality assurance programs.
- Effective and proven vendor management experience to lead and direct various OH providers across various sites and countries.
- Strong decision-making skills, problem solving and independent judgment.
- Proven track record of leading groups in a matrix environment and effectively manage a broad set of stakeholders.
- Proficient in use of computer data systems and word processing.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Other languages (Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa) are desirable but not required.
The location for this role is flexible in UK/Ireland, but desirable to be near one of our major facilities.
