The scope of research topics usually changes very dynamically and depends on the type of scientific projects currently underway. Examples of research topics include: melting and breakup of marine-terminating glaciers, changes in various seawater parameters (physical, chemical, biological), destruction of cliffs and beaches by waves. The person hired for the position of Assistant will be included in a team that conducts field work each year lasting from several weeks to several months. The field research will involve, among other things, operating small boats and pontoons, taking measurements with probes in the glacial bays of Hornsund Fjord, and installing and using various research equipment (e.g., time-lapse cameras, drones, automatic weather stations, sound recorders). After returning from field research, the Assistant’s duties will include supporting the staff of the Polar and Marine Research Department in the preparation of sceintific data for release to publicly available databases, as well as caring for research apparatus (maintaining an inventory of apparatus, controlling service needs, etc.). If you have the appropriate qualifications and interests, the work of the Assistant position may also include diving work involving the installation on the seabed of equipment for long-term measurements and their subsequent recovery, as well as the construction and repair of research equipment. As an option, it is also possible to carry out a doctoral thesis, after acquiring the relevant skills and expertise.A popular science film presenting an example of the research in which a person employed as an Assistant will be involved:Requirements for candidatesCompleted university degree in earth and environmental sciences, or related (e.g.: astronomy; computer science; mathematics; biological sciences; chemical sciences; physical sciences) or engineering and technical sciences (e.g.: automation, electronics and electrical engineering; technical computing and telecommunications; biomedical engineering; chemical engineering; mechanical engineering; environmental engineering, mining and power engineering). It is permissible for applicants who have not yet completed their second degree, but will obtain a master’s degree before the start date.In special cases, it is permissible to employ a person without a master’s degree in a technical position. In this case, the applicant is required to have completed higher education with an engineering degree or a bachelor’s degree.2. interest in marine environment, polar regions, climate change;3. basic knowledge related to the research topics carried out in the Department of Polar and Marine Research, with particular emphasis on oceanographic research, climate change, polar research, fjords, coastal erosion;4. practical skills needed in the course of survey work on the water: use of boats with outboard motors (holding a patent: seagoing motorboat helmsman, motorboat helmsman with experience in sailing at sea, yacht helmsman or higher);5. physical fitness necessary for field work (e.g., experience in hiking or biking, high-altitude hiking, water sports);6. knowledge of English and Polish at a communicative level.Additional advantage will be:1. interest in working with measuring equipment;2. technical skills;3. practical skills needed during measurements on water: diving (diving patent held with experience);4. interest in scientific development;5. knowledge of programming languages, GIS software;6. knowledge of statistical analysis, data processing, time series analysis.Employment conditions: * The amount of funds for employment in accordance with the Act on the Polish Academy of Sciences for the position of assistant is no less than PLN 4,685 gross per month

In case of interest in scientific development and after acquiring the required knowledge and skills, the person hired as an Assistant will have the opportunity to pursue a PhD under the supervision of one of the employees of the Department of Polar and Marine Research. However, working on a dissertation is not a requirement to fulfill. Necessary responsibilities will include conducting field measurements, caring for research apparatus and preparing data for publicly available databases. Field work will also be carried out in difficult field conditions characteristic of the Arctic region (variable weather conditions, temperatures usually below 10 degrees Celsius, possible presence of polar bears). The institute will cover the cost of any training and courses necessary for safe and effective work in the field (e.g., first aid course, firearms and signal gun training, drone operator course, other courses to enhance skills). Protective clothing adapted to working conditions in the Arctic will also be provided. All costs related to travel and stay at the Polish Polar Station Hornsund will be covered by the Institute on a business trip basis (including 1/4 Norwegian per diem for each day of stay in Hornsund; the delegate will not incur any expenses of his/her own). It is also possible to obtain salary supplements from the budget of scientific projects; however, this will depend on the level of commitment and budget possibilities.Required documents:
