Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or Emergency Medicine (or equivalent CCT) with sub-speciality Paediatric Emergency MedicineApplications are invited for this substantive Consultant post in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.The appointed candidate will join our already existing PEM consultant and the team of general ED Consultants to support the department in developing our urgent and emergency care offer to children and their families.The successful candidate will provide general clinical PED sessions and senior input into patient care, ensuring appropriate discharge and hospital admission, along with management and leadership responsibilities expected of Consultants in the specialty.The hospital is a modern District General, we are a trauma unit with a collocated Urgent Treatment Centre. The Emergency Department sees over 90,000 new patients each year, around 20% of which is paediatric. The Paediatric Emergency Department sits alongside the main department, sharing resuscitation resources, nursing and junior medical workforce. We enjoy good links to the Children’s Unit and Paediatric Assessment Unit within the hospital and are currently in the planning stages of an exciting investment into our front door services. This includes the development of the new Children’s Emergency Unit, providing a bespoke environment for patients and their families and posing an exciting opportunity for you help to shape our future services.Main duties of the jobThe Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.Clinical Duties:

  • Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues
  • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
  • Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
  • Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues’ periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
  • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • The post holder will participate in an out of hours consultant rota, detailed within the job plan section
  • With other colleagues enable senior input into patients journey through the ED enhancing quality and Consultant ‘sign off’
  • Maintain the hours of availability of immediate Consultant opinion
  • Enhance the reputation of the department through multi-disciplinary education & training and research
