Job description

Offer DescriptionIn order to meet the performance and durability targets for proton exchange membrane fuel cells for heavy mobility applications, new materials and morphologies are required for membrane electrode assembly (MEA) components. This work focuses on the preparation of proton exchange membranes mechanically and chemically reinforced by active reinforcements and radical scavengers to improve their mechanical properties and durability. It will focus on the preparation of composite fiber-based membranes. The prepared membranes as well as the corresponding MEAs will be characterized by physico-chemical and electrochemical techniques. In particular, the durability of the prepared materials will be evaluated with accelerated degradation protocols specific for the targeted application.Activities performed by the postdoctoral fellow will comprise the fabrication of polymer/composite fibers by electrospinning, and their incorporation in membranes prepared by casting. Selected samples will be characterized within the laboratory using state-of-the-art techniques (proton conductivity measurements, tensile stress-stress tests, dimensional stability…), also including morphological analysis (SEM/TEM microscopy) and electrochemical characterization. A relevant part of the work will be devoted to the characterization in fuel cells of the performance and stability of the developed membranes upon accelerated stress tests. The Institut Charles Gerhardt de Montpellier (ICGM) UMR 5253 is one of the four Institutes of the Balard Chemistry pole. The Department of Materials Chemistry, Nanostructures, Materials for Energy brings together around 70 researchers and lecturer, doctoral students, and post-docs, who develop their research activities on materials and their mechanisms of action for energy by implementing expertise in chemistry and physico-chemistry of materials and interfaces, solid state and materials chemistry. The activity of the recruited person will be carried out within the “Energy Conversion” group, in connection with the group’s activities on fuel cell and electrolyzer core materials, and within the framework of the European project Highlander ( ).Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Chemistry Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Physics Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Chemistry Years of Research Experience NoneResearch Field Physics Years of Research Experience NoneAdditional InformationEligibility criteriaThe candidate must be motivated and autonomous, possess knowledge in materials science/polymers/electrochemistry, and have experience polymer membrane preparation and characterization.
