Internship in Legal Affairs Division

Legal Affairs Division (LAD) is responsible for providing legal advice across the Organisation and for protecting its legal interests, and for maintaining, interpreting and developing the Organisation’s legal framework. With the growth of EUMETSAT in recent years and the addition of new activities, the work of LAD has become increasingly diverse and broad in scope.

An internship within LAD therefore allows a unique insight into the myriad of legal issues facing an international organisation active in the fields of space, meteorology and climate observation. The intern will be part of a small team, which will allow for the possibility of being involved in a broad array of activities. The intern will have the opportunity to interact with other EUMETSAT divisions, notably becoming acquainted with the administrative functioning of the Organisation.

The intern will work on various assignments including performing research, drafting legal opinions, revising documents from other Divisions, and preparing summaries, meetings and presentations. Some administrative work may be required.

Under the supervision of the mentor, the intern will work with Legal Officers in charge of various areas of responsibility of LAD, primarily on institutional law, international civil service law and personal data protection, but also on procurements, cooperation agreements, satellite programmes, and/or other areas as required.

The intern should be aiming for a career in international organisations, in public international law and/or in the aerospace sector.

  • In addition, the intern will support relevant day-to-day activities within the team.

QUALIFICATIONS

The internships are open to bachelor and master students with mandatory internship requirements in Law.

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. It is necessary to be able to work effectively in English. Knowledge of French is an advantage.

Duties

Skills and Experience

  • Have the ability to work effectively in English;
  • Be computer literate;
  • Be intrinsically motivated and curious about the internship subject;
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Have the ability to take the initiative in researching ideas;
  • Have the ability to collect, collate, conceptualize and present information clearly.

Additional specific requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of public international law and European Union law is essential, advanced knowledge is an asset.

Employment Conditions

Length of internship: 6 months
Anticipated start date: Q1 2025

The internship will require a non-disclosure agreement and potentially a basic background check for the intern, due to the sensitivity of the provided information.

No salary is paid to interns who are still in studies, however a daily allowance and contribution to travel / accommodation costs may be provided.

As of 1 January 2025, interns may be granted a daily allowance of EUR 25 per day, relocation cost reimbursement of up to EUR 400, and accommodation cost reimbursement of up to EUR 1000 per month.

Interns are responsible for providing their own health and accident insurance and for finding their own accommodation in Darmstadt.
