The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the largest provider of elective orthopaedic surgery in the UK and provides both routine and specialist orthopaedic services. The Trust is a renowned teaching hospital, with students and doctors both nationally and internationally seeking placements and fellowship roles with the Trust. The Trust hosts the Birmingham Orthopaedic Teaching Programme, one of the largest and most successful orthopaedic training programmes in the UK. The programme is comprised of 40 specialist registrars at different stages of a 6-year programme, during which they rotate through 9 hospitals across the West midlands, gaining experience in the different specialities of Trauma and Orthopaedics. In addition, our medical education team work in partnership with the University of Birmingham to provide 2-week musculoskeletal placements for their fourth-year medical students. One of the unique teaching opportunities the Trust offers during the medical student placement is Patient Simulated Teaching (SIMS).The Trust has recently partnered with the new Aston Medical School at Aston University, which has provided the Trust with an ideal opportunity to increase the scale and offering of its already highly regarded Undergraduate Teaching Academy. This partnership will increase the Trusts already strong reputation as a teaching hospital both regionally and nationally.Main duties of the jobReporting to the Medical Education Manager, the key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Provide full administrative support for medical education, specifically to the Director of Medical Education, Medical Education Manager, Postgraduate Clinical Tutor, Director Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme, Head of Education and Training, Head of the Undergraduate Musculoskeletal Academy, Course organisers and Trainers on the Birmingham Orthopaedic rotation.
  • Deputise for the Medical Education Manager in their absence to promote, organise and co-ordinate postgraduate, undergraduate and continuing medical education for all doctors. Attend meetings and make decisions as appropriate.

Applicants should be qualified to A Level / a Level 3 qualification, or have an equivalent level of knowledge acquired by experience, with evidence of continuing personal and professional development. Experience of coordinating training programmes and activities is essential. The ability to be able to work collaboratively with others and adopt a flexible approach is also essential, together with the ability to be able to multi task in a fast-paced environment. Previous experience of working in the NHS and in a medical education environment would be advantageous.   • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent, including English and Maths at Grade C or above. A level standard in statistics is desirable.
  • NVQ level 3 in business administration or equivalent level of training, and experience.

  • Computer literate with excellent keyboard skills. Ability to create databases and produce reports. Proficient in the use of software/statistical packages for data analysis, desk-top publishing, word processing, data inputting, slide presentations (including PowerPoint and Keynote) etc.
  • Ability to produce work of a high standard with attention to detail, manage workload and prioritise tasks with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and demanding delivery schedules.
  • Knowledge of good office and administrative practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and efficiently with staff, patients and users of the Centre, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

  • Previous NHS experience.
  • Substantial knowledge of/exposure to postgraduate and undergraduate medical education and the organisation of medical educational courses.
