Job description

Offer DescriptionProject title: Understanding multi-scale innate immune defences against bacterial pathogens at the single-cell levelWe are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated computational scientist to join a laboratory of Prof. Pawel Paszek at IPPT PAN to investigate mechanisms involved in the muti-scale coordination of innate immune responses against bacterial pathogens. The project focuses on interactions between innate immune macrophages and the important food-borne bacteria Listeria monocytogenes that causes significant levels of human morbidity and mortality. Our main goal is to elucidate how pathogen threats are encoded in dynamical responses of NF-kB/STAT/IRF systems upon infection. We use interdisciplinary approaches combining experimental and theoretical systems biology apprach. These include live-cell microscopy to monitor the activation of the antibacterial NF-kB/STAT/IRF signaling systems in individual host cells in real-time together with L. monocytogenes growth and virulence.Successful candidate will use data generated in the project to build dynamical mathematical models of infection.Where to apply E-mail[email protected]RequirementsResearch Field Biological sciences » Biological engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Engineering » Biomedical engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Technology » Biotechnology Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Mathematics » Applied mathematics Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Physics » Biophysics Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Computer science » Programming Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/QualificationsWe seek candidates having experience and publication record in at least one of the following areas:

  • Mathematical biology, systems biology, applications of ordinary and partial differential equations / stochastic simulations to describe biological/cellular processes, modelling of signaling pathways modelling.
  • Image analysis, machine learning, statistical data analysis.
  • Programming in Python, Matlab.

Experience in collaborating with experimental scientists or experience in experimental cell biology will be considered beneficial.Specific RequirementsSuccessful candidate will analyze and use high-content microscopy data generated in the project to develop mathematical models of innate immune response. She or he will be expected to:

  • Use differential equations and stochastic simulations to describe activation of the immune response in heterogeneous cell populations, cellular communication, different outcomes of infection (eradication, persistence, replication), regulation of bacterial virulence. Models might account for spatial aspects of the cytokine diffusion and bacterial spread.
  • Perform experimental data analysis, in particular high-content microscopy data, machine learning, statistical analysis and image analyses.
  • Use Python and Matlab for high content data analysis and modelling.
